Muncie, Indiana - The Central Michigan University field hockey team (7-3, 1-0 Mid-American Conference) defeated Ball State, 3-1, in its first MAC game of the season on Saturday afternoon.
Two back-to-back goals in the first half by Kristy Reed (South Wales, N.Y./So.), including one 51 seconds into the contest, were all the Chippewas needed for the win.
Erica Takach's (Duncannon, Pa./Fr.) first career goal late in the second half gave CMU some breathing room after BSU cut the score to 2- 1.
The Chippewas were outshot, 20-13, by the Cardinals.
CMU goalkeeper Janel Spero (Shoreham, N.Y./Sr.) made 14 saves and allowed only one goal in recording her seventh victory of the season.
The Chippewas return to action on Friday, October 4, when they travel to Louisville, Kentucky, to take on the Louisville Cardinals at 4 p.m.
