MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan University wrestling team and head coach Tom Borrelli announced its 2003-04 schedule this week. The Chippewas enter the year ranked No. 17 in the nation by The Wrestling Mall.
Highlighting this year's schedule is a tri-dual in Ann Arbor with No. 7 Michigan and No. 2 Lehigh on Nov. 23. Other highlights include the home opener versus Michigan State on Dec. 2, at the Midlands on Dec. 29-30, the prestigious National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio on Jan. 17-18, and at No. 12 Ohio State on Feb. 15.
"Each year we try to put together a schedule that challenges our squad and prepares them for the post-season," said Borrelli. "I think we have been able to do that this year with matches against teams like Michigan and Lehigh along with the Midland's tournament and the National Duals. I think we have a team with a lot of experience, but it is important that we are able to see the best wrestlers in the country, so we are able to complete with them at nationals."
The Chippewas will open the season at the Michigan State Open on Nov. 8-9. After CMU travels to Ann Arbor for the Michigan and Lehigh duals and faces MSU at home, the Chippewas host Princeton on Dec. 14.
CMU begins the new year on Jan. 11 at the Wendy's Classic in Ashland, Ohio. It will face VMI, Gardner-Webb and Pittsburgh that day. The National Duals is next. In that tournament, 16 of the best teams in the nation battle for the title of national dual meet champion, since the NCAA Championship is based on points scored by individuals.
Following the National Duals, CMU begins the defense of its fifth-straight Mid-American Conference Championship with a dual against Northern Illinois at home on Jan. 30. CMU heads to Eastern Michigan that weekend to face the Eagles on Feb. 1
On Feb. 7, CMU takes on Buffalo in New York and then goes back on the road to face Ohio State a week later on Feb. 15. CMU comes home for its final home dual on Feb. 20 against Ohio. The Chippewas finish their regular season schedule with a dual at Kent State on Feb. 22.
The MAC tournament, which CMU has won five of the last six years, will be held in Athens, Ohio at Ohio University this season on March 6-7. The NCAA Championships are to take place in St. Louis, Mo., on March 18-20.
