Members of the Central Michigan University wrestling team competed unattached at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The Chippewas had three wrestlers win their weight class and nine wrestlers place in the top six. Only one projected starter for CMU competed in the tournament as CMU's starters open competition next weekend at the MSU Open on Nov. 8-9 in East Lansing.
"I was happy with the performance of our team because there were some good teams at the tournament and our wrestlers competed well and were successful," said head coach Tom Borrelli. "I am proud of the guys who placed, especially with the three that won their weight class. These early tournaments are important because they help the older guys get back into competition and it gives the freshman experience at the college level.
"Our freshman learned a lot in this tournament. It is tough for them gage their competitiveness from our practice room, therefore it is good for them to wrestle outside competitition to give them confidence in their abilities. It also shows them how tough the guys are in our room and where they can be if they work hard."
Luke Smith (Chippewa Falls, Wis/Fr.) won the 125-pound weight class by defeating Andy Uhl of Findlay in the finals, 8-3. Jason Borrelli (Mount Pleasant/Jr.) took the title at 133 by defeating Michigan's Chase Metcalf in the semifinals, 10-2, and Matt Schultz of Cleveland State by fall in the finals. He was named the tournament's "Most Outstanding Wrestler." Joe Yager was the third champion, taking the title at 197. He defeated teammate Tom Treadway (Lemont, Ill./Fr.) in the finals with a fall at 2:41.
David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) joined Treadway with a second-place finish. Bolyard, who normally wrestles at 157, fell to third-ranked Matt R. King of Edinboro, 6-2. In the semifinals, Bolyard defeated R.J. Boudro of Michigan, 6-4.
The other wrestlers who placed were: Craig Shutich (Rockford/So.) fifth at 133; Josh Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Fr.) sixth at 157; Brad Anderson (Grand Rapids/Jr.) fifth at 165; and Matt McCartney (Roseville/So.) fourth at 184.
