The Central Michigan University wrestling team (1-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) defeated Michigan State on Tuesday night in Rose Arena in front of one of the biggest crowds in CMU wrestling history, 19-15.
The dual came down to the final two matches of the night. With MSU leading 15-13 after the 184 match, CMU retook the lead with a win at 197 by 13th-ranked Joe Yager (Fulton/Sr.) over Jeff Clemens, 6-5. Yager got a third period reversal to earn the one-point victory.
With CMU lead 16-15, the dual came down to the heavyweight match between CMU's Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.), ranked 12th, and MSU's Mike Keenan, ranked 13th. Stouffer struck first with a reversal in the second period, but Keenan tied the score at two with a reversal of his own. Stouffer regained the lead with an escape, but Keenan fired back with a takedown for a 4-3 lead.
As the match entered the final minute, Stouffer was awarded a point when Keenan slammed him to the mat. Stouffer earned an escape with 26 seconds left and held on for the victory, 5-4. An interesting note is Stouffer's victory over MSU's John Wetcher in the 2002 dual won the contest for the Chippewas.
The dual began at 125 pounds where Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So.) of CMU took on Craig Trombly. Stoffer got a takedown early in the first period and led after one period, 2-1. Stoffer added to his lead with a second period takedown and cruised to a victory, 8-2. CMU's Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.), ranked seventh in the nation, took on Tony Greathouse at 133. Webster got a takedown a minute into the match and then rode Greathouse the rest of first period and all of the second period. Webster then got five takedowns in the third period to earn the major decision, 15-4.
At 141, it was a matchup between ranked wrestlers, CMU's Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Jr.), ranked fourth, and MSU's Andy Simmons, ranked 16th. Mester led, 3-0, heading into the third period after a takedown in the first period and an escape in the second period. Mester rode Simmons the entire third period to earn the riding-time point for a 4-0 victory.
MSU's Darren McKnight got the Spartans on the board with a victory over Andy Keller (Rogers City/Fr.), 8-5. CMU's Ty Morgan (Huber Heights, Ohio/Sr.) battled Arsen Aleksanyan at 157. Morgan held a 3-2 lead midway in the third period when Aleksanyan reversed Morgan onto his back and pinned him at 6:10.
Fifth-ranked David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) of CMU took on Matt McCarty at 165. Bolyard controlled the match, getting two takedowns and a reversal to earn the victory, 8-4. MSU's Anton Hall got the Spartans within one with a victory over Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Jr.), 6-2. The Spartans took the lead with a victory by Nate Mesyn at 184 pounds. Mesyn, ranked 20th nationally, defeated CMU's Russ Vanderheyden (Rockton, Ill./Jr.), 4-3.
The Chippewas return to action on Sunday, Dec. 7, when they host the Tigers of Princeton. The dual will take place in Rose Arena at 2 p.m.
