MOUNT PLEASANT -- The Central Michigan University wrestling team (2-2, 0-0 Mid-American Conference) heads to Chicago, Ill., this weekend to compete in the prestigious Midlands tournament on the campus of Northwestern University.
The tournament will take place on Monday, Dec. 29, and Tuesday, Dec. 30, in Welsh-Ryan Arena and will run all day.
Four CMU wrestlers enter the tournament with seeds. Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Sr.) is seeded third at 141, David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) is third at 165, Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.) is fifth at 133, and Ty Morgan (Huber Heights, Ohio/Sr.) is ninth at 157.
BORRELLI ON MIDLANDS - "This is one of the top individual tournaments in the nation and plays a huge role in deciding the seeding at the national tournament. It is a great opportunity for our wrestlers to face some of the top competition in their weight class and see how they match-up with those guys.
"I was happy with our aggressiveness against Princeton and it is important that we carry that over to this tournament. We have wrestlers who are good on their feet and we need to take advantage of that and get a lot of takedowns. The Princeton dual also gave our wrestlers some confidence, and that it important because we have to believe that we can beat anyone."
RIDING INTO THE SUNSET - Jason Mester has been unstoppable on top this season, recording the riding-time point in three of his three matches that featured riding time. Since the beginning of last season, Mester has earned the riding-time point in 17 of the 26 matches that featured riding time. For his career, he has earned riding time 32 times and had it earned against him only five times.
TAKEDOWN MAN - Jordan Webster has been a takedown machine in his last four matches, recording a total of 17 takedowns. Webster dominated MSU's Tony Greathouse in their match, scoring six takedowns with five in the third period. The 133-pounder scored six more against Brian Kirschbuam in his 14-6 victory. Webster has won three of his last four matches by major decision or better.
PRINCETON RECAP -CMU shut out Princeton on Sunday afternoon, Dec. 14, in Rose Arena, 46-0.
The Chippewas recorded two falls, two technical falls, and six major decisions in the victory. CMU's wrestlers recorded 52 takedowns in the match and did not allow Princeton's wrestlers to score an offensive point. The amazing thing about the 52 takedowns CMU scored was in the two matches where the Chippewas scored pins, they only recorded two takedowns in those matches.
CMU's Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.), ranked 12th in the nation, got CMU off to a solid start with a second period fall at heavyweight. Stouffer began the second period on bottom and reversed Princeton's Joe Looke to his back and got the pin 28 seconds into the period. At 125, CMU's Kyle Stoffer (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/So.) recorded five takedowns as he rolled to a major decision over Kenny Chu, 12-3.
Seventh-ranked Jordan Webster extended Central's lead to 14 at 133 with a major decision over Brian Kirschbaum, 14-6. Webster continued the CMU's takedown barrage with six of his own and he also got a reversal to begin the second period. CMU's Jason Mester continued CMU's dominance with six takedowns in his major decision victory over Bill Trudell, 17-4. At 149, Andy Keller (Rogers City/Fr.) recorded CMU's second pin of the dual. Keller took down Princeton's Matthew Piselli straight to his back for the pin at 1:54.
At 157, CMU continued to dominate the Tigers when the wrestlers were in the neutral position with Ty Morgan notching seven takedowns in a major decision victory over Charlie Wiggins, 16-7. CMU's David Bolyard dominated Princeton's Matthew DeNichilo at 165. Bolyard earned a technical fall with 16 seconds left in the match, 20-5. He got seven takedowns, two two-point nearfalls and a reversal to get the victory.
The takedowns kept coming at 174 as Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Jr.) scored seven in his major decision victory over Matt DeNichilo, 17-6. At 184, Matt McCartney (Roseville/So.) saw his first action in the CMU starting lineup. McCartney earned CMU's sixth major decision of the dual over Allen Sista, 13-5. McCartney recorded five takedowns in the victory.
The last match of the dual was a 197 where 14th-ranked Joe Yager (Fulton/Sr.) of CMU took on Matt Hawrilenko. Yager completed the shutout with the second technical fall of the dual for the Chippewas, 21-6. Yager recorded seven takedowns, a two-point nearfall, a three-point nearfall and a reversal to earn the victory.
