INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Central Michigan University women's basketball team dropped its final tune-up before the Mid-American Conference season here Tuesday night, 71-61, to IUPUI.
The Chippewas are now 4-7 while IUPUI goes to 3-7. CMU is idle until a Wednesday, Jan. 7, MAC home encounter with the University of Toledo at 7 p.m.
CMU went on a 12-3 run late in the first half to take a 34-24 lead before the Jaguars closed the half with 10 unanswered points to knot the game at the break, 34-34. IUPUI then took the lead for good with the first basket of the second half, a three-pointer by Anne-Marie Tupper for a 37-34 edge.
Plagued by poor shooting in the second sessions (24.1 percent on 7-of-29), the Chippewas could never get by the Jaguars who shot 57.1 percent in the second half (12-of-21). CMU was within five at 59-54 with 2:46 to go but could get no closer.
Sophomore Lindsay Mecoli snared game-high honors with 18 points, matching a season-high. Freshman Morgan Wills came off the bench to add a career-high 14 points while sophomore Erin Kuhl had 10 points, four assists and three steals.
Jessica James led IUPUI with 16 points and eight caroms.
The Jaguars shot 50 percent from the field on 24-of-48 while CMU made 20-of-58 for 34.5 percent. The Chippewas won the battle of the boards, 36-31, with Lindy Hatfield, Amanda Elwer and Mecoli grabbing six apiece.
