Wrestler Jason Mester Advances To The National Semifinals

The Central Michigan University 141-pound wrestler Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Jr.) defeated defending national champion Aaron Holker of Iowa State by major decision, 11-3, in the championship quarterfinals at the NCAA Wrestling Championships.
Mester will battle top seed Teyon Ware of Oklahoma in the semifinals tonight. With his quarterfinal victory, Mester has secured at sixth place in the nation at 141 and All-America honors.
Jason Mester took on defending national champion Aaron Holker of Iowa State in his championship quarterfinal match. Mester got on the board first with a takedown and two nearfall points with 20 seconds to go in the first period. After Holker got an escape at the end of the period, Mester held a 4-1 lead going into the second. Holker took bottom and quickly escaped making the score 4-2.
Mester pushed his advantage out to four with another takedown midway though the period and Holker got his third escape of the match to make the score 6-3 at the end of the second. Mester picked neutral to begin the third and the period went scoreless until 20 seconds remaining when Mester got the takedown and three nearfall points to earn the major decision victory, 11-3.
In the consolation second round, CMU had three wrestlers compete. All three were defeated in matches that were decided by one-point. Losing and being eliminated from the tournament were: Ty Morgan (Huber Heights, Ohio/Jr.) at 149 to ninth-seeded Luke Eustice of Iowa, 4-3; David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/So.) at 157 to Nate Wachter, seeded 11th, of Penn State, 3-2; and Kevin Carr (Warsaw, Ind./Jr) at 165 to Tom McMath of West Virginia, 2-1 in sudden victory.
CMU currently stands in 27th place in the team standings with 13 points.
