MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University spotted Northern Illinois a 13-point lead at the end of the first half and could never overcome the deficit in dropping a 74-59 Mid-American Conference women's basketball game here Wednesday night.
Poor shooting plagued the Chippewas as they meshed just eight-of-22 in the first half (36.4 percent) and finished the game at 33.3 percent on 20-of-60. The visiting Huskies were true on 26-of-55 of their shots for 47.3 percent.
NIU moved into a 19-point lead at 27-8 with 7:48 to go in the first half and never saw the advantage dip below 12 points the rest of the way.
The loss was CMU's fourth in a row, dropping its overall mark to 4-10 and its MAC slate to 0-3. The Huskies are now 6-8 for the season and 1-2 in loop play.
Other than the shooting, the game was relatively even on the stat sheet. The Chippewas held a 38-37 edge in rebounding behind seven each from Amanda Elwer and Casey Manning while both teams had 10 assists and 18 turnovers.
Lindy Hatfield led CMU in scoring with 13 points, dropping all four shots she took from the field. Erin Kuhl added 11 points.
Northern Illinois countered with four players in double digits, led by Stephanie Raymond with 17 on six-of-six shooting. Lindsay Secrest added 16 followed by Joi Scott with 13 and Jennifer Youngblood 10.
The Chippewas hit the road for their next two outings, playing at Bowling Green on Saturday at 1 p.m., and at Buffalo on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m.
