ATHENS, OHIO - The Central Michigan University soccer team battled to a 0-0, double-overtime tie at conference-leader Ohio University, a result that strangely seems appropriate.
Both teams entered the match looking to continue school-record shutout streaks and did so in the tie. CMU has now gone six matches without allowing a goal only to be bettered by Ohio's current streak of nine shutouts, a Mid-American Conference record.
The Chippewas remain second in the MAC standings, three points behind Ohio. CMU is 5-1-3 in the conference and 7-4-3 overall. The Chippewas take a day off to travel tomorrow before facing Marshall in Huntington, W.V., on Sunday at noon.
CMU goalkeeper Anne Decker extended her shutout streak to 622:00 minutes in the match, putting together one of her top matches as a Chippewa. She had nine saves overall, including a couple key saves in the second overtime. The sophomore now has seven shutouts this season, besting CMU's season-high mark of six, which Decker set in her freshman season.
The Bobcats were forced to use backup goalkeeper Melissa Parra since starter Michelle Meglaughlin missed the game because of family business. Parra made six saves.
Both teams were able to generate significant scoring opportunities with Ohio producing 23 shots, 14 on-goal. CMU was not far behind with 17 shots and seven on goal. The Chippewas won the corner kicks battle, 5-3. The contest was also a physical one with a total of 39 fouls being called, 20 on CMU and 19 for Ohio.
Jacquie Lacek recorded a team-high four shots with three being on-goal. Both Alison Heydorn and Rachel Snyder generated three shots.
