HUNTINGTON, W.V. - Senior Lisa Taube rescued the Central Michigan University soccer team from a potential upset by last-place Marshall with a match-winning goal in the 77th minute, as CMU won 4-2.
The Chippewas remain second in the Mid-American Conference with a 6-1-3 record, three points behind first-place Ohio. CMU is 8-4-3 overall. Marshall is 0-9-1 in conference and 3-10-3 overall.
CMU took an early lead with a goal from Jacquie Lacek in the 32nd minute. Lacek scored on a penalty kick, her 10th goal of the season. She assisted on the next goal by Alison Heydorn in the 35th minute.
The score remained a 2-0 CMU lead until two minutes into the second-half when Marshall got on the board with a goal by Kassie Hollman. It was the first goal allowed by CMU in 669:30 minutes of play and stopped CMU's shutout streak at six matches.
The Thundering Herd would tie the score in the 68th minute with a goal by Ellerie Karl. That is when Taube scored off a direct free kick. It is the second goal of her career and both have been match-winners.
CMU's final goal came in the 89th minute by Rachel Snyder with an assist from Laura Roberts.
CMU goalkeeper Anne Decker made four saves to earn the victory. Marshall keeper Ashleigh Woods made seven saves in the loss.
CMU out shot Marshall, 20-13, and had seven more corner kicks.
The Chippewas play a pair of critical conference road matches next weekend. They play at Eastern Michigan on Friday at 3 p.m. and against Miami on Sunday at 1 p.m.
