BUFFALO, N.Y. - For the sixth straight match, the Central Michigan University volleyball team played a three-game set. This time, however, the Chippewas came out on the winning end on the road at Buffalo.
CMU ended its six-match, 18-game losing streak by taking the opener 30-21 and then the next two frames 31-29 and 30-25.
The win improves CMU's record to 5-14 overall, 2-7 in the MAC while Buffalo falls to 7-14 overall and 0-8 in the MAC.
The Chippewas hit .252 with three players reaching twin figures in the kills column. Emily Lovejoy posted 14 kills and a match-high 14 digs. Kristen Buter added 13 kills and a pair of block assists and Meghan Moore had 11 kills, an ace, and two block assists.
The Maroon and Gold pounded out 23 kills in game one while hitting a whopping .576. CMU's offensive guns cooled after that with hitting marks of .122 in game two and .135 in the finale.
Buffalo hit .111 for the match, including .037 in game two and .026 in game three.
Katie Weekley had a team-high 10 kills on .400 hitting for the Bulls.
The Chippewas only played three players off the bench and no reserve had a kill on offense.
Melanie Klein contributed eight kills on .438 hitting, along with five block assists, while Aislinn Hayes had five kills, five digs and a career-high four block assists.
Jaimeson Whitman set CMU's offense with 43 assists while also tallying three kills and eight digs. Libero Ali McCrite chipped in with 13 digs defensively.
Buffalo outblocked CMU 12-7 and held an 8-6 advantage in aces, but the hitting percentages were the big difference in the match.
CMU never trailed in game one and the final nine-point margin was the largest of the set. Game two was tied at 12 before Whitman served the Chippewas to a 5-0 run that gave CMU some breathing room. However, Buffalo came back and actually led 29-27 before the Chippewas tallied four straight points to win the game thanks to two Buter kills and a pair of Buffalo errors. After falling behind, 1-0 in game three, the Chippewas never trailed again and cruised to the five-point victory.
Head coach Erik Olson's Chippewas now head out of league play for a match at IPFW on Sunday afternoon.
