MOUNT PLEASANT - A balanced offensive attack, a thrifty hitting percentage and a season-high 10 service aces guided the Central Michigan University volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over visiting Oakland University on Tuesday night.
Game scores were 30-17, 30-23 and 30-24. The Chippewas got a little revenge against the Golden Grizzlies after OU won the earlier meeting, 3-2, back in September after the Chippewas had jumped out to a 2-0 lead in that match.
The Chippewas hit .279 tonight, their second-best attack percentage this season, and that charge was led by senior Emily Lovejoy who recorded a match-high 20 kills on .395 hitting. Lovejoy's efficient performance came after the Chippewas' all-time kills leader was held to a career-low tying three kills with a negative hitting percentage on Sunday night against Miami.
Sophomore Kristen Buter added 14 kills and Meghan Moore had 11 kills, four aces and three block assists for 16.5 points.
The Chippewas stormed out to an early lead in game one, leading 21-9 at one point before holding the Grizzlies to just 17 points in the frame. CMU had a .412 hitting percentage in the opener, along with five service aces.
The Maroon and Gold added another five aces in the second game, including a string of three straight from the jump serve of Moore. OU closed within three at 26-23 but CMU rattled off four straight points to take the game.
Oakland led once early in game three at 5-4 but the Chippewas controlled for remainder while holding the Grizzlies to a .108 hitting percentage in the set.
OU hit .133 for the match and the Grizzlies outblocked CMU, 6-4.
Heather Lippert led the Oakland attack with 12 kills while Erin Palmer notched nine digs and three block assists.
Jaimeson Whitman set the Chippewas to the victory with 46 assists, eight digs and three block assists. Ali McCrite added 10 digs in the back row.
The Chippewas up their record to 7-18 while Oakland fell to 5-20.
CMU travels to Northern Illinois and Western Michigan this weekend for a pair of conference matches.
