Wrestling Crushes Oregon State in Home Opener, 36-4

MOUNT PLEASANT - Back-to-back pins by Russ Vanderheyden and Wynn Michalak led the 14th-ranked Central Michigan University wrestling team to a 36-4 victory over Oregon State in its home opener on Sunday afternoon.
The Chippewas improve to 2-0 on the season while the Beavers fall to 1-2.
Vanderheyden took one of the Oregon State's two ranked wrestlers at 184, No. 17 Dan Pitsch. Vanderheyden took an early lead with a takedown midway through the first period. The two wrestlers traded takedown attempts in the second before Vanderheyden used an underhook to take Pitsch to his back and record a fall with eight seconds remaining in the frame. Before the crowd could even settle back into their seats, Michalak notched a fall just 56 second into his match with Travis Gardner. Michalak turned a single leg takedown into a cradle to give six team points to CMU.
The match began at 149 as Mark DiSalvo, ranked 10th in the nation, got the Chippewas on the board with a victory over Orlando Perez. DiSalvo scored a pair of takedowns to build a 4-1 lead after the first frame. The Dayton, Ohio native then cruised to victory adding two more takedowns for a 10-4 victory.
Redshirt freshman Eric Neil made his debut at home against Tony Hook at 157. Hook jumped out front with three takedowns in the first period for a 7-4 lead. Hook added another takedown in the second and two five-point moves in the third for a 20-7 major decision. The major put the Beavers up, 4-3.
Second-ranked David Bolyard gave CMU the lead for good with a dominating victory over OSU's Anthony Weber, 13-4. The Akron, Ohio native held a 9-2 lead after the first period, scoring three takedowns and a three-point nearfall in the frame. The senior added another takedown, an escape and the ride-time point for the major decision. At 174, No. 8 Mitch Hancock scored five takedowns and a two-point nearfall to notch a 13-4 major decision over Steve Grayson.
The featured matchup took place at heavyweight as CMU's Bill Stouffer, ranked eighth, took on 11th-ranked Ty Watterson. Stouffer, a Lowell native, got on the board first with a first period, adding another late in the period for a 4-1 lead. Stouffer didn't stop there, reversing Watterson to his back for a five-point move and a 9-1 lead. Watterson made a late charge by adding a pair takedown to make the final score 12-8.
CMU's Luke Smith improved to 9-2 with a 6-3 victory over Eric Stevenson at 125. The 13th-ranked Smith earned the victory with five points of nearfall early in the second. Chippewa Jason Borrelli, ranked 19th, pulled off a close victory over Bobby Pfennings, 5-4, to extend CMU's lead at 133. Borrelli pulled ahead with an escape midway through the final period and held on for the one-point victory.
The final match saw CMU's Brandon Carter take on OSU's Clint Leonard. Carter controlled the match, getting an early takedown to take the lead. He than scored a five-point move late in the match to lock up the major decision, 8-0.
The Chippewas take off a week for the holidays before heading to the Midlands on Dec. 29-30. The Midlands take place at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill.
