YPSILANTI -- The Central Michigan University women's track squad used a complete effort to pull a surprise victory at the Mid-American Championship Indoor Championship on Saturday evening.
The Chippewas finished with 103 points while second-place Eastern Michigan finished with 92.5. It was the second time that CMU has been crowned MAC champs in the past three indoor season's.
In just her first season on the job, head coach Karen Lutzke was named the MAC "Coach of the Year."
CMU won the championship despite winning only two events and finishing in second in two events. The Chippewas had 10 different individuals score points in 18 different events.
Senior Jackie Bozin led the way for CMU by winning MAC titles in two different events. She took the top spot with a provisional qualifying mark of 3787 in the pentathlon and took first in the high jump with a mark of 5-10.
The only other second-place finishes for CMU were Katie Davis in the weight throw and Jackie Smart in the triple jump (41-3 3/4). Davis also took fifth in the shot put with a toss of 46-6 1/4.
Smart's mark broke her own school record. It was the third meet in-a-row that she had done so.
Fallon Bailey scored in three different events, taking fifth in the long jump (18-9 1/4), 60m (7.63) and 200 (25.33).
Other multiple event scorers for the Chippewas were: freshman Ariss Seals, sixth in the 60m (7.76) and eighth in the 60m hurdles (8.90); Melissa Miller, seventh in the mile (5:01.62) and the 3,000m (9:59.77); Cami Moll took sixth in the 3,000m (10:01.73) and fourth in the 5,000m (17:26.55); Tamera Thomas, fourth in the 60m hurdles (8.69) and sixth in the high jump (5-7).
