The first wrestler to compete in the championship first round was 133-pounder Jordan Webster (Washington, Ill./Sr.). Webster, the 12th seed, took on Sean Markey of The Citadel. Markey took an early lead with a takedown 1:30 into the first period, and he extended his lead by scoring three nearfall points off the takedown. Webster cut into Markey's lead with a takedown late in the second period, but Markey extended it back to four with an escape early in the third. Webster got within one point with a takedown with 30 seconds left in the match, but that was as close as he would get, falling 6-4.
No. 4-seed Jason Mester (Mineral Point, Wis./Sr.) took on Rob Becker of George Mason in his opening round match. Mester, an All-American last season, held a two-point lead after the first period with a takedown a minute in as he rode Becker out the rest of the period. Backer got on the board early in the second with an escape, but Mester quickly took him back down for a three-point lead. Mester scored an escape 45 seconds into the third and added a late takedown to give him an 8-1 victory.
First-time national qualifier Adam Cunningham (Maple Ridge) battled No. 12 seed Mike Maney of Lock Haven at 149. Cunningham wasted little time before getting his first takedown, notching one 15 seconds into the match. Maney earned an escape 30 seconds later, making the score at the end of the first period, 2-1. Cunningham earn a reversal 55 seconds into the second to give him a three-point lead. No. 7-seed David Bolyard (Akron, Ohio/Jr.) battled Nebraska's Jacob Klein. The match entered the second period tied at one after both wrestlers got called for stalling twice in the first. Bolyard scored an escape early in the second to take the lead and then extended that lead with the lone takedown of the match, which he scored midway through the period. The match then experienced a long delay because of blood, but after it restarted, the only point scored was an escape by Klein. Bolyard added the riding-time point to make the final score 5-3.
Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Jr.) took on Andrew Roy of Rutgers in his first-ever national tournament match. Roy took the lead with a takedown a minute into the match, riding Hancock for just over a minute before the Chippewa escaped. Roy pushed his lead up with an escape early in the second and it entered the third that way. Hancock got within one with an escape 20 seconds into the third to get with one, but Roy secured his riding-time point midway through the period to go back up by two. Hancock got a takedown with 10 seconds left to tie the score and was then awarded a point when Roy was given his third false-start warning, giving Hancock the victory, 5-4.
The final wrestler to go was heavyweight Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Jr.) taking on top-seeded Tom Rowlands of Ohio State. Rowlands went to work early, taking a lead he would never relinquish with a takedown 40 seconds into the match. Rowlands led 6-2 after the first period, racking up three takedowns. He would add two more takedown in the second, and two takedowns and a reversal in the third to make the final score, 18-7.
