MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University Athletics Director Herb Deromedi announced the hiring of Karen Lutzke as the head women's track and field and cross country coach Thursday morning.
Lutzke takes over the post after serving as the interim head coach since former coach Kathleen Raske resigned on August 18, 2003.
While serving as the interim head coach, Lutzke led the indoor squad to its second Mid-American Conference indoor championship in three years and picked up "Coach of the Year" laurels in the process.
"Karen has proven herself not only as an assistant, but since she's had the opportunity to be the head coach in cross country and during the indoor track season," said Deromedi. "Winning the indoor track championship this past March was a significant accomplishment for the staff and the team.
"She has all the qualities that you would look for in a head coach. We're excited about the direction she's taking this program."
Lutzke takes the helm after serving four years as an assistant coach for both the track and field and cross country squads. She was voted the cross country "Coach of the Year" in 2000 after leading the Chippewa harriers to a MAC title.
