MUNCIE, Ind. - Late match heroics by Michelle Noble and Anne Decker helped Central Michigan University soccer team earn a 3-3 tie in its conference opener at Ball State on Sunday afternoon.
The double overtime match was in its 104th minute when Ball State was awarded a corner kick. The kick deflected off a BSU player and was headed into the goal when Noble reached out, picked up the ball and threw it out of harms way. Noble, the team captain, was then given a red card and ejected from the match, and the Cardinals were awarded a penalty kick.
With the match on the line, CMU goalkeeper Decker stepped up big and saved the penalty kick, leaving the match in a tie. Decker finished the match with 11 saves, a season high for her and fourth best in CMU single match history.
CMU moves to 2-3-1 and 0-0-1 in the Mid-American Conference with Ball State going to 4-0-2 and 0-0-2 in conference.
The Cardinals entered the match having given up only two goals in five matches this season, but the Chippewas used a balanced attack with three different players scoring goals to break BSU's two-match shutout streak. After only scoring one goal in its first three matches, CMU has scored 10 in the last three and is unbeaten during at stretch.
CMU took the early lead with an unassisted goal from Rachel Snyder in the 26th minute. BSU tied the match 11 minutes later with a goal by Brittany Walden.
The Cardinals would take the lead five minutes into the second half with a goal from Stacy Shull, but CMU didn't let that lead stand for long as Jacquie Lacek notched her fourth goal of the weekend to tie the score at two. Lacek deflected in a pass from Rachel Snyder for the goal.
CMU would take its second lead of the match in the 71st minute with an unassisted goal from Jessie Jandasek, her first as a Chippewa. The final goal of the match came in the 86th minute by BSU's Laura Bandy.
The match was an offensive slugfest with the two teams combining for 35 shots, 23 on goal, and 14 corner kicks. CMU had 18 shots, nine on goal, and five corners and Ball State had 17 shots, 14 on goal and nine corners.
CMU travels east next weekend for a pair of MAC matches. The Chippewas face Kent State on Friday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m., and then travel to Buffalo for a match on Sunday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m.
