KENT, Ohio - Not rain, wind or the defending conference champions could slow down the red-hot Central Michigan University soccer team as it shutout Kent State, 4-0, on Friday afternoon.
The Chippewas are now unbeaten in their last four matches with the road victory. The squad evened their overall record at 3-3-1 with the victory and is unbeaten in the Mid-American Conference at 1-0-1. The previously unbeaten Golden Flashes fall to 4-1-2 and 1-1 in the MAC.
The match was plague by the remnants of Hurricane Ivan, making the field nearly unplayable because of the rain and wind. That didn't slow the CMU offense as it scored three or more goals for the fourth-straight match.
CMU went on the attack early and notched a goal in the first minute to go ahead for good. MAC "Player of the Week" Jacquie Lacek remained hot, scoring her first of two goals 42 seconds into the match by heading in a free kick from Lisa Taube. The Golden Flashes had a chance to tie the score at one in the sixth minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. But, for the second-straight match, goalkeeper Anne Decker stepped up big and stopped the penalty kick to help the Chippewas retain their lead.
CMU added to its lead five minutes later when Alison Heydorn took a pass from Rachel Synder and blasted a shot past KSU All-MAC keeper Alicia Fernandez. The Chippewas got their third goal of the half in the 40th minute when Lacek knocked in a rebound off a Laura Roberts shot. Lacek, a sophomore, has scored six goals in her last three matches and now has seven goals to go along with two assists this season.
The final tally came in the 82nd minute when junior transfer Correy Cabrera scored the first goal of her CMU career with an assist from fellow junior transfer Jessie Jandasek.
CMU keeper Decker made four saves in the victory, the seventh shutout of the sophomore's career. She needs one more shutout to tie the team career record of eight currently held by Kari Alexander.
The Chippewas have scored 14 goals in their last four matches and seven in the two MAC contests. Entering this match, the Golden Flashes had allowed only three goals in six matches this season and 17 goals in their last 26 contests.
The Chippewas play their second MAC road contest this weekend on Sunday as they face Buffalo at 1 p.m.
