Wrestling Crushes Competition at Wendy's Classic

ASHLAND, Ohio - The Central Michigan wrestling team crushed its competition at the Wendy's Classic on Sunday, Jan. 16, in Ashland, Ohio.
The Chippewas went 3-0, won 28 of 30 individual matches and outscored their opponents, 121-6. CMU began the day with a 36-3 victory over Big Ten-foe Purdue, then defeated Cleveland State, 38-3, and ended the day with a 47-0 shutout of Appalachian State.
Going 3-0 on the day were redshirt freshman Luke Smith (125), junior Jason Borrelli (133), redshirt freshman Brandon Carter (141) and senior David Bolyard (165). Also finishing the tournament undefeated with multiple victories were redshirt freshman Eric Neil (2-0 at 157), senior Mitch Hancock (2-0 at 174), senior Russ Vanderheyden (2-0 at 184), redshirt freshman Wynn Michalak (2-0 at 197) and senior Bill Stouffer (2-0 at heavyweight).
Alex Lammers picked up one of the biggest victories for CMU on the day with a 14-6 major decision over 12th-ranked Ben Wissel of Purdue at 184. The match was Lammers' lone match on the day.
Also picking up important victories were three redshirt freshman who earned their first career victories wrestling for CMU in a dual meet. Heavyweight Bubba Gritter was a 9-4 winner over Jake O'Brien of Purdue. O'Brien defeated Gritter twice last year. Brandon Sinnott picked up a 12-6 win at 174 over J.T. Miller of Cleveland State while twin Christian Sinnott was a 6-4 victor at 197 over Joe Phillips of CSU. Christian is usually a 184-pounder but bumped up to 197 for his match.
The Chippewas now prepare for the National Duals next weekend in Cleveland, Ohio. The tournament brings together 16 of the top wrestling teams in the nation to determine the unofficial dual meet national champion. The tournament begins on Saturday, Jan. 22, and continues to Sunday, Jan. 23. It takes place on the campus of Cleveland State University at the CSU Convocation Center.
