ANN ARBOR - The fifth-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team proved to be too much for banged up Central Michigan University, downing the Chippewas, 24-15.
The Wolverines improve to 2-1 while the 14th-ranked Maroon and Gold fall to 2-1.
The Chippewas were without two of their top wrestlers as 149-pounder Mark DiSalvo, ranked 10th, and eighth-ranked heavyweight Bill Stouffer were unable to compete due to injury. These injuries forced CMU to forfeit at 149 and use freshman backup Bubba Gritter at heavyweight. Gritter gave second-ranked Greg Wagner fits before falling, 8-3.
CMU got off to a strong start with a victory by forfeit at 125 and Jason Borrelli's victory over fifth-ranked Mark Moos at 133. Luke Smith picked up the forfeit at 125 to give CMU six team points. Borrelli then rallied from an early 8-0 deficit by dominating the second and third period for a 10-8 victory.
The Wolverines took the lead for good by winning the next five matches. That run included victories by Josh Churella at 141; a win by forfeit for Eric Tannenbaum at 149; third-ranked Ryan Bertin at 157; fourth-ranked Ryan Churella at 165; and 11th-ranked Nick Roy at 174.
The Maroon and Gold battled back with wins at 184 and 197 to get within six points entering the heavyweight match, 21-15. Alex Lammers controlled his match at 184 with Josh Weitzel, winning 4-2; while Michalak was dominated on his feet for a 11-7 win over Willie Breyer.
The Chippewas return to action on Friday, Jan. 7, when they host Penn. The dual in Rose Arena begins at 7 p.m.
