CLEVELAND, Ohio - The hard work and fight finally paid off for the Central Michigan University wrestling team as it secured its highest finish ever at the National Duals.
After falling to eighth-ranked Minnesota, 20-18, in the morning session, the Chippewas battled from behind to win three-straight matches in the consolation round and earn at least a top six finish. CMU defeated No. 16 Arizona State, 20-18, in the consolation first round, downed No. 14 Northern Iowa, 21-18, in the second round and beat No. 21 Penn State, 25-15, in the third.
The Maroon and Gold now get a rematch with Minnesota in tomorrow's consolation semifinals. The two teams meet at 11 a.m., with the winner heading to the third-place match and the loser sliding into the fifth-place contest. The placing matches are set for 3 p.m. The National Duals are being held at the Cleveland State Convocation Center in Cleveland, Ohio.
The only other time CMU placed in this tournament was 1999, earning seventh that year. The lowest the Chippewas can finish this year is sixth. This tournament has eight of the 11 teams ranked higher than CMU with three of those already set to finish below the Chippewas including No. 4 Michigan.
One of the biggest obstacles CMU had to face all day was the absence of a 133-pounder in the line-up. Junior Jason Borrelli was injured in the Chippewas first dual of the tournament and CMU had to forfeit the weight in every dual, putting the team in a six-point hole early.
Stepping up for the Chippewas were a pair of seniors, David Bolyard and Mitch Hancock. Both went 4-0 on the day with a pair of victories over ranked opponents. Hancock also scored a pin in the Arizona State and Northern Iowa matches to spark CMU to victory.
Below are the individual recaps for each dual.
No. 12 Central Michigan University 25, No. 21 Penn State University 15
CMU's middle weights led the Chippewas into the consolation semifinals as they won five straight matches from 149 to 184 in a 25-12 victory over No. 21 Penn State.
Luke Smith got CMU off to a strong start with a 7-5 victory over 16th-ranked Adam Smith at 125. Smith used a five-point move in the first period to take control of the match. The Chippewas would again fall in a hole after forfeiting 133. PSU's Dewitt Driscoll, ranked 18th, then pinned Brandon Carter late in the second period at 141 to extend the Nittany Lions' lead to a 12-3 advantage.
The Chippewas would start their run with a win by major decision at 149. Mark DiSalvo controlled that match from start to finish, cruising to a 12-4 victory over Jack Decker. Next was 157 where Eric Neil picked apart ninth-ranked Nathan Galloway, scoring two five-point moves in the first period on his way to an 18-7 victory.
CMU's David Bolyard took on Jared Turner in the next match. Bolyard scored a pair of first period takedowns and recorded a 12-4 major decision to pull CMU into the team lead, a lead it would never relinquish.
The match at 174 was a back-and-fore affair with CMU's Mitch Hancock scoring his fourth victory of the day, 10-8. Hancock used two third period takedowns to defeat James Yonushonis. Redshirt freshman Christian Sinnott capped CMU's run with a 8-5 victory over Chad Unger at 184. Sinnott got an early lead in the match with two first period takedowns, but Unger pulled within one point early in the third period. Sinnott sealed the victory with two takedowns in the third to give CMU a 21-12 lead in the team score.
Penn State's Phil Davis , ranked 16th, did get the Nittany Lions within striking distance heading into the final match by defeating Russ Vanderheyden at 197, 9-5. That made the team score 21-15, but, again Bubba Gritter sealing the victory at heavyweight for CMU as he notched a major decision over C.J. Wonsettler, 9-1.
No. 12 Central Michigan University 21, No. 14 Northern Iowa 18
In the match that sealed a tournament place, the Maroon and Gold recovered from a 15-0 hole by winning five of the last six matches to earn the team victory over Northern Iowa.
CMU's rally began at 157 pounds as Eric Neil was a 6-5 victor over UNI's Chris Bitteto. Seventh-ranked David Bolyard than picked up an important win at 165 as he defeated 12th-ranked Nick Biami, 5-3 to pull CMU into striking distance.
The Chippewas really picked up momentum at 174 and 184 as Mitch Hancock and Russ Vanderheyden pinned CMU back into the dual. Hancock stuck third-ranked Eric Hauan 1:17 into the match and Vanderheyden pinned UNI's Alex Dolly in 1:01 to give CMU a three-point lead in the team score after trailing by nine just five minutes before.
The Panthers did tie the dual at 18 with a 5-3 win by fifth-ranked Sean Stender over CMU's Wynn Michalak at 197, but the Maroon and Gold dealt the final blow as back-up heavyweight Bubba Gritter notching a 9-2 victory over Michael Shedek.
Northern Iowa built its early lead by scoring wins at 125, 133, 141, and 149. The match at 149 was a controversial win for UNI's Jeff Harrison, ranked 12th. Harrison notched a 3-2 win over Mark DiSalvo, ranked 10th, with a questionable takedown giving Harrison the two points he needed for the victory.
No. 12 Central Michigan University 20, No. 16 Arizona State University 19
The Chippewas 20-19 win over No. 16 Arizona State was also a come-from-behind affair. CMU trailed 9-0 early in the match before wins by major decision at 141 and 149 pulled the Chippewas back into the dual.
At 141, Brandon Carter recorded a 10-0 win over ASU's Chris Freije. Mark DiSalvo then scored a 19-6 victory over Adam Hickey at 149 to pull CMU within one team point. The two teams traded victories at the next two weights with ASU's Brian Stith, ranked 17th, tallying a 3-1 overtime win over Eric Neil at 157 and CMU's David Bolyard beating Patrick Pitsch, 4-1, at 165.
The turning point in the match came at 174 as Mitch Hancock scored a pin in 39 seconds to give the Chippewas a five-point lead which they would never relinquish. ASU did pull back within one with a victory by major decision at 184 as 10th-ranked C.B. Dollaway defeated Alex Lammers, 15-7.
The deciding match was at 197 as CMU's Wynn Michalak took on fifth-ranked Ryan Badar. Michalak overcame an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Badar and hand CMU the team victory. Arizona State did win at heavyweight to make the final score close with sixth-ranked Cain Velasquez defeating Bill Stouffer, 8-2.
No. 8 Minnesota 20, No. 12 Central Michigan University 18
CMU's first match over the day was a heartbreaker as the Chippewas fell to Minnesota, 20-18, in a dual that went down to the final seconds of the last match.
After trailing 13-0, the Chippewas pulled ahead, 18-17, entering the final match between CMU's Bill Stouffer, ranked seventh, and No. 2 Cole Konrad of Minnesota. After a scoreless first period, Stouffer took the lead by riding Konrad for 1:57 on the second period before the Minnesota heavyweight escaped with three seconds left.
Stouffer regained the lead by scoring an escape early in the third, but Konrad took control for good midway through the period with a takedown. He then erased Stouffer's riding time advantage and held on for a 3-2 victory and a team win for the Gophers.
Minnesota jumped out to the early 13-0 lead by winning the first three matches. Fourth-ranked Bobby Lowe got the Gophers on the board with a takedown in overtime for a 5-3 victory over Luke Smith at 125. Smith held a 3-2 lead until the final seconds of the match when Lowe was awarded a point because Smith received his second stall warning.
CMU's Jason Borrelli held a 3-2 lead over fifth-ranked Mack Reiter at 133, but was injured early in the third period and was forced to default the match, giving Minnesota six critical team points. The Gopher's run finished with a 16-4 victory at 141 by Bobby Lowe over Brandon Carter. Lowe scored two five-point moves in the match to secure the major decision.
The Chippewas started their own streak with a win at 149 by 10th-ranked Mark DiSalvo. DiSalvo used two first period takedowns to defeated C.J. Schlatter, ranked 11th, 5-3. CMU's Eric Neil then put on a takedown clinic at 157, scoring seven in his 18-7 victory over Jeremy Anderson.
Seventh-ranked David Bolyard got the Maroon and Gold's third-straight win with a 4-3 victory over eighth-ranked Matt Nagel at 165. Bolyard scored the deciding takedown in the second period for the one-point win. Mitch Hancock capped CMU's run with a 3-2 victory in double overtime over Josh McLay at 174. Hancock tallied the deciding reversal in double overtime to tie the team score at 13 apiece.
The Gophers jumped back ahead at win by major decision at 184. Seventh-ranked Roger Kish scored four takedowns in the third period to record an 11-3 victory over Alex Lammers.
The Chippewas bounced right back to take the lead for the first time in the match at 197. Wynn Michalak picked Minnesota's Matt Koz apart to score an 18-2 technical fall and give CMU a one-point lead in the team race heading to the heavyweight match.
