COLUMBUS, Ohio - A return trip to head coach Cristy Freese's alma mater, ninth-ranked Ohio State, resulted in a different outcome from last season as the Buckeyes won, 6-1, over the Central Michigan University field hockey team on Sunday. CMU won last year's match, 2-1.
OSU boosts its record to 13-3 while CMU drops to 6-9. The Chippewas have lost four consecutive matches and are winless against the Big Ten (0-5).
"Ohio State is one of the top two teams in the Big Ten," coach Freese said. "(The Buckeyes) have excellent players all over the field. We had a tough time trying to stop their four goals off penalty corners."
The Buckeyes had the upper hand in penalty corners (12 to four) and shots (24 to seven).
OSU netted two goals in the first 10 minutes against CMU goalkeeper Danielle Frank. Yesenia Luces scored her eleventh goal of the season unassisted just 66 seconds into the match. In the ninth minute, Lucy Clayton tallied her first of four goals in the game off a penalty corner. Saskia Mueller and Yesenia Luces recorded the assist. Luces had three assists on the day.
The lone Chippewa goal came from Allyson Doan unassisted off a rebound in the 26th minute. Doan has three goals on the season.
The Buckeyes scored the final four goals. Clayton tallied her second goal of the match in the 31st minute, and Katelin Condon netted her first season goal on a Leticia Fragapane assist in the 45th minute. Clayton tallied the last two goals in the 47th and 66th minute. Mueller and Luces both assisted on each goal as they came on penalty corners.
Buckeye keeper Lindsay Williams stopped four shots in the win and Frank made eight saves.
Despite the loss, CMU is using the OSU match to prepare the team for the remaining conference season.
"We are trying to use this match to help us in the next two weeks of the MAC," Freese said.
CMU battles two MAC opponents on the road next weekend at Miami and Ball State. The Miami match is Friday, October 21, at 3 p.m., and BSU is Saturday, October 22, at 1 p.m.
