Volleyball Falls to Akron, 3-1

MOUNT PLEASANT - A strong start was not enough for the Central Michigan University volleyball team as it dropped a 3-1 decision to Akron at home on Friday evening.
The Chippewas won game one of the match, 30-25, but dropped the next three, 30-19, 30-20, and 30-26, to fall to 3-18 on the year, 0-11 in the Mid-American Conference. The Zips improve to 9-15, 4-8 in the MAC.
Alison Baker turned in a solid performance with a team-high 17 kills and a .364 hitting percentage. She was the only CMU player in double-figures as Erika Neumann was next with a career-high nine. Courtney Kersten put together a setter's double-double with 45 assists and 16 digs while Ali McCrite led the defense with 23 digs.
The Zips had four players with double-digit kill totals as Jennifer Stewart tallied a match-high 20 to lead the squad. She also had 18 digs for a double-double. Emily Kocinski also recorded a double-double with 18 kills and 17 digs while hitting a match-high .378. Molly Rutledge also helped Akron efforts by recording 17 kills and a match-high four blocks. Rachael Rush dished out 61 assists and Kim Horn had a match-high 26 digs.
The Zips sweep every team statistical category by notching more kills, 72-57, digs, 82-75, and blocks, 7-5 while also outhitting the Chippewas, .285-.160.
The Maroon and Gold return to action tomorrow night when they host Buffalo in Rose Arena beginning at 7 p.m.
