Toledo Rockets Past Volleyball, 3-1

MOUNT PLEASANT - A strong start in game one and a late rally in game four could not make up for a struggling offense in games two and three as the Central Michigan University volleyball team dropped a home match to Toledo on Friday night, 3-1 (29-31, 30-21, 30-22, 31-29).
The Chippewas fall to 3-22 on the year, 0-15 in the Mid-American Conference. The Rockets improve to 16-11 overall, 9-6 in the MAC and also clinch to No. 5 seed in the conference tournament meaning CMU will play at Toledo in the first round of the tournament next Tuesday, Nov. 15.
CMU tallied 19 kills in game one and 16 in game four, but just a total of 20 in games two and three. The Chippewas hitting percentage also faltered with a .024 attacking mark in the middle games compared to a .180 percentage in the first and last frame.
The Chippewas got a standout effort from Whitney Evers with 14 kills, a .344 hitting percentage and nine total blocks. Kate Fissel also tallied double-digit kills with 12 on the night. Ali McCrite led CMU's defensive effort with 28 digs while Courtney Kersten had a setter double-double with 47 assists and 14 digs. Erika Neumann also got into double-figures in digs with 12.
Kate Bean led the Rockets with 20 kills and 11 digs. Emi Holsclaw tallied a setter double-double with 53 assists and 14 digs while Lora Sarich led UT with 24 digs. Chelsey Poquette, daughter of CMU Hall of Fame member Ben Poquette, racked up 13 kills while Sarah Kreher tallied 12 more to help Toledo get the victory.
Toledo held the advantage in kills, 64-55, and hitting percentage, .200-.107, while the Chippewas recorded more digs, 73-68, and blocks, 11-10. The Rockets also had nine service aces compared to just three for CMU.
The Chippewas wrap up the regular season tomorrow with a home match against Ball State beginning at 7 p.m. Before the match, CMU will recognize its two seniors, Jillian Bouchey and McCrite.
