Wrestling Racks Up a Pair of Victories

CHARLESTON, S.C. - The Central Michigan University wrestling team racked up a pair of victories Sunday afternoon against North Carolina, 29-9, and The Citadel, 37-9.
The ninth-ranked Chippewas wrestled both duals in Charleston, S.C., on The Citadel campus, the alma mater of CMU head coach Tom Borrelli.
The Maroon and Gold won 16 of the 18 contested matches, forfeiting the 133-pound weight class in both duals because of injuries. The team has won its last five duals, holding its opponents to single-digits in each dual while CMU has scored at least 29 points every outing. The squad is now 14-4 this season.
The Chippewas took on North Carolina in their first dual of the day. The squad won the first eight matches of the dual including a fall at the opening weight of 141 by Brandon Carter over Isaiah Britton. Also scoring bonus points was Andy Keller at 157 with a win by technical fall over Aaron Holt, 21-4.
In the dual with The Citadel, CMU dominated the contest by scoring bonus team points in six of its eight wins. Carter again scored bonus points with a major over Michael Arias, 12-2, at 141, in the dual's opening weight. Also notching bonus point wins were David Bolyard (165), Wynn Michalak (197) and Bill Stouffer (285) with falls, and Russ Vanderheyden (184) with a technical fall.
Up next for CMU is a home dual with Kent State on Friday, Feb. 18, in Rose Arena. The dual is set for 7:30 p.m.
