ATHENS, Ohio -- Sunday was another record-setting day for the eight-ranked Central Michigan University wrestling team as it rolled past Ohio, 23-9, Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ohio.
With the victory, the Chippewas wrapped up sole possession of their record-setting seventh-straight Mid-American Conference Championship. The squad is the first CMU team to win seven titles in a row. CMU also notched its 16 dual meet victory, also a school-record. The previous high was 15 wins in 1987-88 when CMU went 15-2.
The Chippewas were the aggressor the entire dual, scoring 19 takedowns compared to just four for the home team. In fact, senior 165-pounder David Bolyard scored more takedowns in his match, eight, than the entire Ohio team in the dual.
CMU finishes the conference season with a 5-0 record. The Maroon and Gold won 40 of the 48 matches that were contested, outscoring its conference foes 146-28 in terms of team points for matches that were contested.
The Maroon and Gold finish 16-4 overall while Ohio falls to 10-12-1, 3-2 MAC.
The dual began with a 8-3 victory by No. 10 Mark DiSalvo over Mike Allen at 149. The Bobcat than tied the score at 157 with a 8-2 win by fourth-ranked Jake Percival over Eric Neil.
The Chippewas answered back and took control of the dual by winning the next three matches, two by major decision. At 165, ninth-ranked David Bolyard gave CMU the lead by scoring eight takedowns to major Aaron Gomoll, 20-7. Seventh-ranked Mitch Hancock followed that up with a 8-2 victory over Ryan Knapp at 174 with Alex Lammers wrapping up the run with a 11-0 major decision win over Brian Cesear at 184.
Ohio's Joel Weimer was able to score an upset at 197 with a 3-1 victory over 10th-ranked Wynn Michalak, 3-1. Weimer scored the deciding takedown with just six seconds remaining in the dual.
The Chippewas locked up the dual victory by winning the next three matches starting at heavyweight where No. 7 Bill Stouffer used a first period takedown to notch a 4-2 win over Jeremiah Beltran. Beltran beat Stouffer in the MAC Championship finals last season.
CMU's No. 18 Luke Smith continued to roll at 125 with a 3-1 win over Caleb Metcalf. Eight-ranked Jason Borrelli continued his comeback from injury with a 4-0 win over Matt Smith. Borrelli got two early takedowns for the only points of the match which saw Smith take top in the third period to ride Borrelli out to lose.
The final match saw Ohio's Jim Fowler win his seventh match in eight tries by defeating Brandon Carter, 6-4. The deciding point in the match was a five-point move, a reversal and three nearfall points, scored by Fowler midway through the contest.
The next outing for the Chippewas is the MAC Tournament to be held at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The tournament kicks off on Friday, March 4, and continues on Saturday, March 5. CMU has won seven of the last eight conference tournament titles.
