MOUNT PLEASANT-- The Central Michigan University women's track team has the Mid-American Conference Championship in its sights again. CMU has won two of the last three championships and it has the opportunity to repeat this weekend as the Chippewas host the 2005 Indoor MAC Championships this Friday and Saturday, February 25-26.
"We've been very successful competing at home, not only this year, but in the past as well," head coach Karen Lutzke said. "We are ready to compete."
The Chippewas have placed well in their scoring meets and a number CMU athletes have turned in some of the top marks in the conference this season.
Tamera Thomas has tuned in the best mark in the conference in the 60m hurdles and high jump and the second best score in the pentathlon. She has placed first in the 60m hurdles in every meet this season with a conference best time of 8.38. Senior Katie Davis also has placed in the top five in every meet this year in the shot put and currently holds the third best throw in the conference. Other top contributors are Jackie Smart in the jumps, Nancy Figueroa and Ariss Seals in sprints, and Jenaie Edwards in middle distance.
"We had a solid meet last week, and it is all geared toward winning the MAC," said Lutzke. "We can't control what the other teams are going to do this weekend so we are just focused on us and we're not worrying about the other teams. We're as ready as we're going to be, we're just going to do the best we can. I know we're ready to defend our title."
Events will begin at 11 a.m., on both Friday and Saturday at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. An adult two-day pass is $12.
