MOUNT PLEASANT - In a battle of Top 25 teams, the No. 16-ranked Brigham Young University Cougars came into Rose Arena and defeated the No. 12-ranked Central Michigan University Chippewas on Saturday afternoon, 194.975-194.525, ending CMU's string of 27 consecutive home victories.
"All things come to an end," head coach Jerry Reighard said. "It was just a rough day for us. We knew BYU was a great team and that this was a pressure situation. We knew that they were going to come at us but we weren't able to counter that today."
CMU struggled with falls on its first three events and the Chippewas dug themselves an early hole to try and climb out of. The Maroon and Gold had a 48.400 on vault, 48.800 on bars and 48.250 on beam.
"It was hard when we knew we were behind to try and rally," Reighard said. "But there is nothing wrong with this loss. It keeps us honest, and in the grand scheme of things, maybe makes us come back to reality."
The Chippewas bounced back on the floor with a 49.075 but it wasn't enough as the Cougars maintained their lead with a solid showing on the beam.
Junior Mattie Crawford led the Chippewa charge with a meet-high 9.900 on the vault. She also tied for the top spot on the floor with a 9.875.
Sara Burtinsky posted a 9.825 to win the bars while BYU's Dayna Smart won the beam with a 9.900. The Cougars' Kacie Capra tied Crawford on the floor with a 9.875 and Jaime Mabray won the all-around with a 39.100.
CMU closes the home season next Sunday when the Chippewas host Northern Illinois on March 20 at 2 p.m.
