Six Wrestlers Advance at NCAA Championships

MOUNT PLEASANT - Six Central Michigan University wrestlers were victorious during the first session of the NCAA Championships on Thursday afternoon.
The championships are being held at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo. They run Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19. The second session begins at 6:30 p.m. CST, tonight with the championship second round and consolation first round. Six CMU wrestlers remain alive in the championship bracket while three are in consolations.
The six victorious wrestler in session one were: 133-pounder Jason Borrelli, the No. 9 seed; Mark DiSalvo, the 10th-seeded wrestler at 149; returning All-American David Bolyard, seeded ninth at 165; No. 6 seed Mitch Hancock at 174; 197-pounder Wynn Michalak, seeded 12th; and Bill Stouffer, the seventh seeded wrestler at heavyweight.
The three wrestlers who fell in the opening round and are now in the consolation bracket are: 125-pounder Luke Smith; Eric Neil at 157; and 184-pounder Alex Lammers.
Borrelli became the first wrestler to advance in the championship bracket. The 133-pounder recorded a 14-7 victory over Tony Curto of Bloomsburg. Curto did jump out to a 2-0 lead with an early takedown, but the Mount Pleasant native controlled the rest of the match, scored five takedowns, a two-point nearfall, the riding-time point and an escape for the seven-point victory.
The next victory came from DiSalvo with a 7-4 win over Cody Greene of Missouri. DiSalvo, the No. 10 seed, was down 2-1 midway through the first period when he took the lead for good with a swing-by takedown for a 3-2 lead. DiSalvo added two more takedowns in the match to secure the victory.
Bolyard began his tournament with a 6-4 victory over Craig Dziewiatkowski of Navy at 165. Bolyard controlled the match throughout, scoring a pair of takedowns to earn the victory.
Hancock also advanced with a victory Michigan State's R.J. Boudro, 4-3 in double overtime. The match ended regulation tied at three and went scoreless in the first overtime. Hancock began the second overtime on top and rode Boudro out the entire 30 second period, than escaped in the next 30 second overtime period for the 4-3 victory.
Redshirt freshman Wynn Michalak won in his first match at the national tournament with a 8-0 victory over Chad Hoare of Bloomsburg at 197. After a scoreless first period, Michalak got a reversal in the second frame for a 2-0 lead. He then dominated Hoare on top, locking up a cradle late in the period for three nearfall points. He would add a takedown and the riding-time point to earn the major decision.
The final CMU wrestler to compete was heavyweight Bill Stouffer. Stouffer scored three takedowns to defeat Oregon State's Ty Watterson, 7-3. The senior scored a takedown midway through the first period to take control of the match and never looked back.
Smith lost to Cornell's Mike Mormile, 4-3. The CMU redshirt freshman was leading 2-0 entering the third period, but Mormile scored a reversal and takedown in the final frame to earn the victory.
Neil was ahead of Matt Hill of Edinboro, 3-2, in the third period, but was taken to his back midway through the frame to give Hill a 6-3 lead. CMU's redshirt freshman tried to comeback but was unable to, falling 10-5.
Lammers lost a hard fought battle to No. 11 seed Justin Dyer of Oklahoma, 6-4. Dyer used two early takedown to grab the lead, but Lammers fought back to get within one poinr late in the match. Unfortately for the CMU senior, Dyer added another takedown late for a 6-4 victory.
