MOUNT PLEASANT -- It's safe to say the Central Michigan University women's track team didn't finish the 2005 indoor season the way it expected to.
During the year the Chippewas finished near the top in most of the meets they competed in, yet the defending Mid-American Conference champions finished fifth at the 2005 MAC Indoor Track Championship, which was held at CMU's Jack Skoog Track.
"Overall, I think it was a successful season," said coach Karen Lutzke. "We just didn't have the type of meet we needed to win the championship. We were disappointed with the outcome, but it is just something that there is no control over."
Currently the team is on a break between the indoor and outdoor seasons.
"This is just our down time, a chance for us to focus on the upcoming season," said Lutzke. "We have a healthy squad. Now, we're just preparing for the outdoor season and we're doing what we need to do to win the outdoor championship. We are going to build on the success we had from the indoor season."
The outdoor season will begin with a meet at Indiana, April 1-2.
Highlights from the indoor season included Tamera Thomas' two MAC titles in the pentathlon (3877) and the 60m hurdles (8.34). She was named the conference meet's Most Outstanding Performer.
Five school records were also broken. "Breaking five school records is pretty significant when you think about all the great athletes and teams this program has had in the past," said Lutzke. "Not only that, we had so many personal bests set this season."
Four Chippewas also shined in the classroom and were named Academic All-MAC - Ashley Anderson, Kathryn Davis, Amanda Lyon and Danielle Quisenberry.
