ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Four Central Michigan University wrestlers are still alive after session three of the NCAA Championships.
Mark DiSalvo (149), Mitch Hancock (174), Wynn Michalak (197) and Bill Stouffer (285) sit in the consolation fourth round and need to win one more match to earn All-America honors. Jason Borrelli (133), Eric Neil (157) and David Bolyard (165) lost during session three and were eliminated from the tournament. The Chippewas sit in 19th after the session with 20.5 points.
The championships are being held at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo. They run Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19. The fourth session begins tonight, March 18, at 6 p.m. CST, with the championship semifinals and two rounds of consolation matches.
CMU's lone quarterfinal match came at 149 as CMU's Mark DiSalvo, the No. 10 seed, took on second-seeded Phillip Simpson of Army. Simpson scored the first points with a takedown midway through the first period for a 2-0. With DiSalvo close to scoring an escape, Simpson caught the CMU wrestler on his back and recorded a fall at the 2:32 mark. DiSalvo falls to the consolation fourth round where he will face Ben Cherrington of Boise State for the chance to be an All-American.
David Bolyard was victorious in his first match of the day, defeating Jake Donar of Wisconsin, 9-4. Bolyard controlled the match throughout, recording four takedowns and the riding-time point while giving up just four escapes.
Bolyard moved on to face Matt Palmer of Columbia in the next round. Bolyard was ahead, 2-0, when he was injured as Palmer tried to escape. The CMU wrestler tried to continue but was unable to compete, knocking him out of the tournament.
Mitch Hancock also won his first match of the day, a 1-0 victory over J.J. Holmes of Eastern Michigan at 174. The only scoring in the match was an escape by Hancock in the second period.
Hancock faced Kelly Flaherty of Wisconsin in his next match, winning 5-1. Hancock jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a takedown in the first period and a reversal to begin the second. Flaherty got on the board with an escape midway through the second, but Hancock pushed his lead back up to four with a penalty point and held on for the victory.
Wynn Michalak was also victorious in his first match of day two at 197, beating Jake Butler of Princeton, 7-4. The Caro freshman scored a takedown 45 seconds into the match and rode Butler for a minute and 30 seconds before being reversed. Michalak escaped late in the period for a 3-2 lead entering the second frame. In that period, Michalak scored a reversal and takedown to lock up the victory.
Michalak took on 10th-seeded Jerry Rinaldi of Cornell in his consolation third round match, winning 11-8. The deciding point came midway through the second period with Rinaldi ahead, 3-2. Michalak reversed the Cornell wrestler to his back for a four-point move and a 6-3 lead. Rinaldi clawed back to get within 9-8, but Michalak scored a takedown with 15 seconds left to lock up the victory.
Heavyweight Bill Stouffer made quick work in his first match, pinning Allen Kennett of Portland State in just 47 seconds. He faced Joe Dennis of Cleveland State in the next round. Stouffer dominated that match, racking up a major decision, 9-0. Stouffer tallied two takedowns, a three-point nearfall, an escape and the riding-time point in the victory. Two wrestlers fell in their consolation second round matches and were eliminated from the tournament.
Jason Borrelli was reversed to his back with five seconds left to fall 9-6 to Iowa State's Jesse Sundell at 133. Borrelli was leading 4-1 after the first period, but Sundell tied the score with a three-point nearfall in the second period. After Sundell took the lead with an escape early in the third, Borrelli retook the lead with a takedown with a minute left. That made the score 6-5 Borrelli, but he was unable to hold on for the victory.
Also falling in his consolation second round match was 157-pounder Erid Neil to C.P. Schlatter of Minnesota, 6-2. Schlatter tallied an early takedown to gain the lead and never looked back, scoring another takedown another with an escape and the riding time point while allowing just two escapes by Neil.
