The third session begins tomorrow morning, March 18, at 10 a.m. CST, with the championship quarterfinals and two rounds of consolation matches. Mark DiSalvo was the lone Chippewa to advance to the quarterfinals with a 5-3 victory over No. 7 seed, Jeff Harrison of Northern Iowa. Harrison got on the board first with an escape to begin the second period, but the 10th seeded DiSalvo took the lead with a takedown midway through the period. Harrison then escaped to tie the score at two entering the final period. DiSalvo began the third on bottom and retook the lead with an early escape. The Dayton, Ohio native then recorded a takedown late in the third to wrap up the victory.
Jason Borrelli was the first Chippewa to wrestle taking on the No.8 seed Scott Jorgensen of Boise State at 133. Jorgensen jumped out to an early lead with a first period takedown and rode out the rest of the period. An escape in the second period gave Jorgensen a three-point lead, but Borrelli battled back with a takedown of this own. That brought the Mount Pleasant native within one but that was as close as Borrelli would get, falling 7-2.
Ninth-seeded David Bolyard took on Iowa State's Travis Paulson, the eight seed, in his second round match at 165. The match ended regulation tied at five and went scoreless in the first overtime. In double overtime, Paulson used a reversal with five seconds left to notch a 7-5 victory and send Bolyard to the consolation bracket.
Mitch Hancock fell to Leonel Sanchez of Cal-Fullerton at 174 in his second round match. Hancock was ahead 1-0 entering the third period, but gave up two takedowns in the final frame to fall, 5-4. Wynn Michalak had a hard-fought loss in his second round, as he fell to No. 5 seed Sean Stender of Northern Iowa. Stender took the early lead with a first period takedown, but Michalak tied things up entering the final period because of a pair of escapes. The redshirt freshman then took the lead with a two-point nearfall early in the third with Stender pulling within one with an escape. The Northern Iowa wrestler then notched the deciding takedown with 15 seconds left for a 5-4 victory.
Bill Stouffer, the seven seed, took on 10th-seeded Scott Coleman of Iowa State in his second round match. Coleman scored first tallying a takedown late in the first round. The two traded escapes to make the score 3-1 midway through the third when Stouffer tied it up with a takedown. Coleman then reversed Stouffer with 20 seconds to go for a 5-4 victory.
