ST. LOUIS, Mo. - ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Four Central Michigan University wrestlers became All-Americans on Friday night at the NCAA Championships.
The All-Americans are: junior Mark DiSalvo (Dayton, Ohio/Carol.) at 149; senior 174-pounder Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Detroit Catholic Center); freshman Wynn Michalak (Caro/Caro) at 197; and senior heavyweight Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Lowell). Michalak is the first freshman All-American in CMU wrestling history while the other three are also first-time All-Americans.
The championships are being held at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo. They run Thursday-Saturday, March 17-19. The medal round begins tomorrow morning, March 19, at 9:30 a.m. CST, with the medal rounds. The session will be televised on ESPNU.
CMU sits in 14th place with 38.0 points, 3.5 points behind 10th-place Lehigh.
Michalak went 2-0 in the fourth session with a pair of last-second victories. The redshirt-freshman beat Daren Burns of UNC Greensboro to become an All-American, 7-6. Burns took the early lead with takedown in the first period with a Michalak escape making the score 2-1 entering the second period. The Caro native tied the score at two with an escape and the match entered the third period that way. The craziness started midway through the period when Burns tallied a reversal only to have Michalak answer back with one of his own. Burns then recorded another reversal with Michalak quickly escaping, giving Burns a one-point lead. Michalak then scored a takedown with less than 10 seconds left and rode Burns out for the victory.
In his consolation quarterfinal match, Michalak took on another freshman, Phil Davis of Penn State. Both wrestlers scored a takedown and an escape in the first period to tie the score at 3-3. Michalak scored an escape in the second period for a one-point lead, but Davis tied it back up with an escape of his own in the beginning of the third. With the match tied at four entering its final stages, Michalak scored a takedown with 20 seconds left and held on for a 6-5 victory. He now moves on to the consolation semifinals where he will face top-seeded Jon Trenge of Lehigh.
Mark DiSalvo became an All-American with a 5-1 victory over Ben Cherrington of Boise State. DiSalvo took control early with a takedown 30 seconds into the match and rode Cherrington out the rest of the first period. The CMU wrestler scored another takedown early in the second period and cruised to the victory.
DiSalvo faced Ty Eustice of Iowa in his next match. DiSalvo came out strong with an early takedown, but Eustice answered back with a takedown of his own in the second period for a 4-3 lead. After DiSalvo tied the match with an escape in the third, Eustice secured the victory by scoring a takedown with 25 seconds left for a 6-4 victory.
Mitch Hancock faced Imad Kharbush of Stanford in his first match of the session. After a scoreless first period, the Royal Oak native scored first with an escape early in the second period. Kharbush then took the lead with a takedown 30 seconds into the second period with the CMU wrestler quickly escaping to tie the score at two. Hancock then rode Kharbush out the entire third period to earn the riding-time point and a 3-2 victory.
Hancock faced Eric Hauan of Northern Iowa in his next match. Hauan took the early lead with a takedown 30 seconds into the match, but Hancock tied it up with an escape and a point for a technical violation. Hancock took his first lead of the match by escaping early in the second, but gave up a point when he was called for an illegal hold late in the period. Hauan retook the lead with an escape of his own in the third period and locked up the victory with a late takedown to make the final, 7-4.
Stouffer battled Matt Fields of Iowa for the chance to be an All-American at heavyweight. Stouffer led 6-4 after the first period that saw Stouffer get the first takedown, Fields escape and then get a takedown of his own only to have Stouffer reverse Fields to his back for a two-point nearfall. Stouffer extended his lead to 7-4 with an escape in the second period, but Field scored a takedown to pull within one midway through the period. Stouffer escaped again to push his lead to two points, but Field again got within one with an escape early in the final period. The match was scoreless the rest of the way with only the riding-time point Stouffer secured being added, making the final score 9-7.
The CMU wrestler faced Michigan's Greg Wagner in his next match. Wagner scored first with a takedown 30 seconds into the match, but Stouffer reversed him to tie the score at two. The CMU heavyweight then put Wagner on his back for a two-point nearfall with the Michigan wrestler escaping late in the period to give Stouffer a 4-3 lead entering the second period. Wagner started the second on bottom and escaped to tie the score. He then got a takedown with 10 seconds left in the period that ended up being the deciding points in the match as Wagner won, 6-5.
