ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Central Michigan University wrestling team wrapped up the 2005 NCAA Championships with a 12th place finish, scoring 41 points.
Four Chippewas earned All-America honors at the tournament. Finishing sixth was Wynn Michalak (Caro/Caro HS) at 197, the first freshman All-American in CMU wrestling history. Senior 174-pounder Mitch Hancock (Royal Oak/Detroit Catholic Central HS) finished seventh while junior Mark DiSalvo (Dayton, Ohio/Carol HS) at 149; and senior heavyweight Bill Stouffer (Lowell/Lowell HS) both took eighth. All four are first-time All-Americans.
CMU tied Cornell, Minnesota, Oklahoma and Iowa for the fourth-most All-Americans. Only national champion Oklahoma State (seven), Michigan (five) and Illinois (five) had more. This is the second-most All-Americans in CMU history as the team in 1999 had five. It is also the second-straight top 15 finish for CMU and its fifth top 20 finish in the last eight year.
The championships were held at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo., on March 17-19.
Wynn Michalak at 197, was the lone wrestler to have a match in the consolation semifinals. Michalak faced top-seeded Jon Trenge in that match and fell, 11-3. The contest was decided early with Trange scoring a takedown midway through the period and racked up seven near fall points for a 9-0 lead after the first.
Michalak battled B.J. Padden of Nebraska in his match for fifth-place. Padden scored the first points with a takedown 10 seconds into the match. He then rode Michalak out the remainer period for a 2-0 lead after the first. The match was scoreless in the second period with Michalak scoring the next point, an escape early in the third period. That made it a 2-1 score, but Padden added another takedown midway the third. The final score was a 5-3 victory for Padden
Mark DiSalvo took on fourth-seeded Matt Storniolo of Oklahoma in his seventh-place match at 149. DiSalvo took an early lead with a takedown midway through the first period. Storniolo got an escape to make the score 2-1 entering the second. The Oklahoma wrestler got a 3-2 lead early in that period with a reversal. Storniolo rode DISalvo out the rest of the period and the third was scoreless, giving Storniolo a 3-2 victory.
Mitch Hancock received a forfeit in his match for seventh-place against Dan Waters of American, giving the Royal Oak native seventh at 174. Hancock finishes the season with a 36-5 (.878) record. His season win total ranks as tied for the ninth-best all-time while his winning percentage this year is the seventh-best ever.
The final wrestler to go was heavyweight Bill Stouffer as he took on Iowa State's Scott Coleman for seventh. The match headed to overtime tied at one with the only scoring for both wrestlers being an escape with Coleman recorded the winning takedown 30 seconds into the overtime, making the final 3-1.
