MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan University wrestling has been honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for having the fifth-highest team grade-point average (3.13) in the nation.
"Ranking as one of the top teams academically is something we strive for each year and one thing we are very proud of," head coach Tom Borrelli said. "We emphasize being successful on the mat and in the classroom to our wrestlers and recruit athletes that have those priorities.
"This honor, along with the Mid-American Conference team title and 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, shows that we have great student-athletes in this program. We hold our athletes to a high standard and they have done a great job meeting that mark."
Four wrestlers were named to the NWCA All-Academic team. They were: senior Bill Stouffer (Lowell, Mich./Heavyweight); junior Jason Borrelli (Mount Pleasant, Mich./133); junior Mark DiSalvo (Dayton, Ohio/149); and redshirt freshman Wynn Michalak (Caro, Mich./197). This is the third time Borrelli has been named to the All-Academic team while the other three are all first-time honorees.
Stouffer, DiSalvo and Michalak earned All-America honors this season with all four winning MAC titles. Stouffer carries a 3.01 GPA with a major in physical education while DiSalvo has a 3.79 GPA in sport studies. Michalak is a physical education major with a 3.66 GPA and Borrelli holds a 3.56 GPA in general management.
CMU has finished in the top 16 of the team rankings the last 13 years and in the top 10 the last five seasons. The four All-Academic team members ties the University of Michigan for tops in the nation.
