Evers Leads Volleyball to 3-1 Victory Over Oakland

Whitney Evers made her home debut a special one as she led Central Michigan University volleyball to a 3-1 (30-25, 30-26, 34-36, 30-20) victory over Oakland on Tuesday, Sept. 6.
Evers had 12 kills and just one error in 19 attempts, a hitting percentage of .579. She also tallied a team-high five block assists.
The Chippewas improve to 2-1 while Oakland falls to 1-5. Kate Fissel recorded a team-high 15 kills, hitting .211 for the match. She also had one block solo and three block assists. Courtney Kersten tallied 43 assists and added 15 digs and seven kills while Ali McCrite had a team-high 19 digs.
Other outstanding performers included Mary Ochmanek and Alison Baker. Ochmanek hit .353 in the match with eight kills and 12 digs. Bakers hit .294 with seven kills and three block assists.
CMU recorded just one more kill then OU, 57-56, while both teams tallied 65 digs. The Chippewas had 10 team blocks compared to 7.5 for Oakland. CMU also outhit the Grizzlies, .191-.098, and had four more service aces, 9-5.

The Chippewas controlled game one with 15 kills and just three errors while Oakland hit .053 in that frame. CMU jumped out to a 10-5 lead in the game and never looked back. OU did get it back to 13-11, but CMU went on a 4-0 run at that point to secure the victory.
The Grizzlies took an early led in game two but up 25-22, CMU scored eight of the last nine points for a comeback victory. Jaclyn Jonas played a key role in the comeback as she tallied back-to-back service aces late in the run. Oakland did outhit CMU in that game, .103-.050.
Game three was a thrilling affair with 20 ties and 11 lead changes. OU took an early lead in the game and held it for almost the entire frame below a late 5-0 run gave CMU a 29-26 lead. The Chippewas were unable to convert on their two match-point chances and OU took the game on consecutive kills by Adrienne Leone. The Grizzlies hit .333 in that frame with 23 kills compared to .227 and 18 kills by CMU.
CMU made sure there would be no game five as they took control early in the fourth game and cruised to victory. CMU jumped out to a 5-0 lead and extended that to 17-7 midway through the match. CMU hit .214 in the game while Oakland dropped to -.152.
The Chippewas head to Tennessee this weekend to play in the Comcast Lady Vols Classic on Friday and Saturday. The squad battles College of Charleston on Friday at 5 p.m., and Tennessee (1 p.m.) and Baylor (5 p.m.) on Saturday.
