YPSILANTI - A total of 19 points in the shot put helped the Central Michigan University women's track and field team to a fourth-place showing in the 2006 Michigan Intercollegiate Indoor Championships hosted by Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
The Chippewas scored 83.5 points to trail Michigan (162), Eastern Michigan (123) and Western Michigan (103.5). Michigan State finished fifth (45) and Detroit sixth (eight).
Junior Mary Raney led three CMU placers in the shot with a winning heave of 45-3 3/4. Kari Taylor placed second with a toss of 43-8 1/2 and freshman Michaela Danhoff was sixth at 39-7.
Tamera Thomas won the 60m hurdles with a meet and fieldhouse record time of 8.32.
"I was pleased with how we did in this meet," coach Karen Lutzke said. "Our goal was to not overload our athletes in multiple events but to concentrate on specific events and keep them fresh by not doing too much. I thought we kept our focus, got better and stayed competitive. We were looking for development and we saw it."
In addition to the two event titles, Chippewa athletes captured five second-place finishes on the day. In addition to Taylor's runner-up showing in the shot, she also placed second in the weight throw with a mark of 53-8 1/4.
Other second place marks included: Leslie Johnson in the 200m (24.60), Jackie Rivard in the 5000m (18:00) and Tomea Peebles in the triple jump (38-4).
"It was great to see some new people scoring for us like Peebles and Rivard," Lutzke said. "Peebles has been over 38 feet in the triple jump for three straight weeks now and for Rivard to run 18 minutes flat in her first collegiate 5000m is outstanding."
Jenaie Edwards was the lone Chippewa to clock a third-place finish. She ran the 400m in 56.23.
The Chippewas will now head to the Bowling Green Quadrangular on Friday, Feb. 3 at 5 p.m.
