Women's Basketball Drops Exhibition Opener

MOUNT PLEASANT – Athlete’s In Action shot a blazing 64.2 percent from the field in a 92-78 victory over the Central Michigan University women’s basketball in an exhibition game Tuesday night.
AIA also lights out from three-point territory, hitting 10-of-11 (.909) in the victory. The Chippewas kept things close by forcing 21 turnovers, including 15 steals, and pulling down 25 offensive boards, but shot just 39.7 percent from the floor, including just 25.0 percent (4-of-16) from three-point land.
Stacey Verhoff led CMU with 17 points and five steals on the night, going 7-for-9 from the floor. Seniors Ann Skufca and Sharonda Hurd both chipped in 12 tallies in the loss while freshman Britni Houghton also had 12, going 6-of-6 from the free throw line. Houghton also had a team-high six boards, five offensive, while Skufca and Angel Chan shared team-high honors with three assists apiece.
Athlete’s In Action was led by a trio of players. Crystal Coston had a game-high 20 points, going 7-of-11 from the floor and 6-of-8 at the free throw line. Cassidy Blaine finished with 19 points including going 4-of-4 from three, and Katie Voigt added 16 tallies and a game-high 10 boards. Erica Geraghty had a game-high seven assists.
The Chippewas finished with more steals (15-6), blocks (3-2) and shot a better percentage at the free throw line (.762-.737) while AIA had more assists (25-13). Both squad’s finished with 34 rebounds as CMU had 25 offensive boards and nine defensive, and AIA tallied 12 offensive and 22 defensive.
The Chippewa return to action with their second exhibition contest this Sunday, Nov. 5, against the University of Windsor. Tip off is set for 3 p.m.
