Skufca's Big Night Leads CMU to Victory

MOUNT PLEASANT – A career night by senior forward Ann Skufca led the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team to an 85-63 victory over Saginaw Valley in CMU’s home opener Monday night.
Skufca finished with a career-high 21 points behind five three-pointers. The forward finished 5-for-6 from behind the arc and 4-for-4 at the free throw line. She also collected four blocks during the contest and is now three away from becoming CMU’s career leader. The current record, held by Carla Sterk, is 104.
The Chippewas (1-1) shot well from behind the arc and at the stripe. CMU went 9-of-20 from three-point land (.450) and hit 24-of-27 free throws (.889).
CMU had three other players score in double-figures. Freshman Britni Houghton had 16, junior Stacey Verhoff had 13, and sophomore Angel Chan had 11 on 3-of-4 three-point shooting.
Turnovers also played a key role as CMU scored 31 points off turnovers while SVSU tallied just seven. CMU recorded 18 steals while forcing 27 turnovers by SVSU, and the Cardinals grabbed seven steals on 11 CMU turnovers.
CMU’s bench also outscored SVSU 35 to 17. Off the bench, sophomore Latisha Luckett and Houghton led the Chippewas in rebounding with six boards each.
At halftime, CMU led 42-25 but the Cardinals used a 7-0 run to get within 10 with 17 minutes remaining. CMU then went on a 20-0 run over the next 7:28 to put the game away and tally its sixth straight victory in the home opener.
The Cardinals were led by Valerie Smith with 20 points and nine rebounds.
Up next, the Chippewas travel to Chicago to face University at Illinois-Chicago on Nov. 17 and Chicago State University on Nov. 19.
