CMU Pulls Away Late Against Windsor

Central Michigan University women’s basketball used a 35-17 run in the last 11 minutes of play to defeat Windsor University in an exhibition game at home on Sunday afternoon, 89-71.
Five Chippewas reached double-digits with senior Sharonda Hurd leading CMU with 17 points. Junior Stacey Verhoff added 13 points, while junior Dana Westover chipped in 10 on 4-4 shooting.
CMU’s bench provided a boast with freshman Britni Houghton contributing a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds and sophomore Latisha Luckett scoring 11. The Chippewas won the bench scoring battle, 33-23.
The Chippewas’ defensive pressure created 19 steals off of 24 turnovers by Windsor. Verhoff and junior Candace Wilson led CMU with 6 steals each. CMU would convert those turnovers in 22 points compared to just three by UW.
Senior Ann Skufca recorded five blocks along with nine points.
CMU also took advantage of its trips to the free throw line, going 26-36 from behind the stripe. Hurd connected on 9-11 while Luckett and Houghton put in 5 of 8 attempts each.
The two teams traded baskets for most of the first half, but CMU went up 37-35 with less than a minute after a jump-shot by Verhoff. Then, with seven seconds left, Houghton stole the ball and took it in for a lay-up to give the Chippewas a 39-35 lead at the half.
The Chippewas started to pull away from Windsor midway through the second half. With 10:47 left, the score was tied 54-54. CMU went up 56-54 after a pair of free-throws by Hurd and never looked back. A lay-up by Hurd with 7:46 remaining put CMU up 68-58, and jumper by Ann Scufa extended the lead to 78-62 with 4:08 left.
Windsor was led by Dranadia Roc with points 30 and Amy Bakos with 12 rebounds.
The Chippewas tip off the regular season against Big East foe Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 10.
