STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Central Michigan University women's track and field squad slipped one spot from its first-day position and finished in eighth place in the 15-team field at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge Cup, hosted by Penn State University. The host Nittany Lions won the meet with 111 points, well ahead of second-place Akron's 82 points. CMU totaled 41 points and finished fourth among the six Mid-American Conference teams that competed at Penn State's Ashenfelter Track.
"I thought that everyone stepped up and performed well for us at this meet," CMU head coach Karen Lutzke said. "I was pleased with how we competed. We were looking for some solid performances from individuals, and I definitely feel that we got some of those today."
The Chippewas set two new school records on Saturday. Sophomore Jenaie Edwards lowered her own mark in the 600m, shaving nearly two seconds off the old record with a time of 1:32.54. She finished second to Georgetown's Ashley Hubbard in the race. Senior Leslie Johnson claimed the top mark in the 400m at 55.95 seconds, three-hundredths of a second better than the previous mark. That time was good for a seventh-place finish for Johnson.
"Both of those ladies ran excellent races," Lutzke said. "Jenaie is becoming so much more confident at longer distances (than the 400m). She ran a great race from start to finish."
Other scoring performances for CMU on day two at the Sykes-Sabock included the 4x400m relay team with a fifth-place effort (3:45.23) and Tomea Peebles' fourth-place showing in the triple jump (38-1 1/2).
CMU had scoring performances on day one from Tamera Thomas (long jump - second), Jackie Rivard (5000m - third), Kari Taylor (weight throw - fourth) and the distance medley relay team (sixth).
The Chippewas will host the Jack Skoog Open on Friday, Feb. 17 in their final meet before the Mid-American Conference Indoor Championships. The non-scored meet begins at 5 p.m. at the Jack Skoog Indoor Track.
