One of Central Michigan University's finest student athletes has earned yet another academic honor.
Casey Manning, a senior guard on the women's basketball team, has been chosen to present at the national Undergraduate Research Posters on the Hill in Washington D.C.
"I feel very honored to have been selected to present my research on Capitol Hill," said Manning, one of 40 students selected from more than 400 national applicants.
This accomplishment is no surprise to Manning's mentor Minghui Chai, a faculty member in CMU's chemistry department.
"During basketball season, she has to miss a lot of classes," said Chai. "She takes her textbooks to the out-of-town games and takes any available time to study by herself. She is a role model for chemistry and athletic students, especially female science students."
In addition to this national honor, the chemistry major was named to the Academic All- Mid-American Conference team. She was also named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District team, earning second team honors. Manning has been named the MAC's Scholar-Athlete of the Week five times in her career, including three times this season.
On the court, Manning averaged 10.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, and 2.3 steals for CMU this season. Manning finished third in the MAC in steals, seventh in assist/turnover ratio (1.21), 12th in assists and 26th in scoring.
In her final game, Manning netted a career-high 26 points against Ohio to become the 15th player in school history to break the 1,000 point barrier, finishing with 1,005. She also finished fifth on CMU's career steals list with 188.
The Southgate, Michigan native will present her study on L-Dopa, a drug commonly used to treat Parkinson's disease. She will present her research on Capitol Hill on April 25th.
