MOUNT PLEASANT - An eight-run third inning provided all the scoring the University of Michigan would need in a 19-4 nonconference baseball win at Central Michigan University on Wednesday.
Four different Wolverines had at least three hits apiece, including Adam Abraham, who finished 4-for-6. Mike Schmidt was 3-for-6 with a pair of homers. He also scored three times and drove in four.
Both of Schmidt's homers came in the top of the third inning and served as bookends to Michigan's eight-run rally in that frame. He hit a solo shot down the left field line to lead off the inning, then put a two-run homer on the board with two outs to account for UM's final two tallies of the inning. In between, Michigan (13-10 overall) knocked out four separate run-scoring singles.
Michigan would eventually add two runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and five in the ninth to pull away.
Costly for CMU was a total of 13 runners left on base. The Chippewas (15-13) loaded the bases with one out in the second and did not score, then scored three runs with two outs before stranding the bases loaded in the third. In the fifth, CMU had three runners on with one out, but scored just once and left the bases loaded at the end of the inning.
Bryan Mitzel's team-leading ninth home run of the season accounted for the Chippewas' three runs in the third. He drilled a fastball over the wall in left center that scored J.T. Jones and Noah Lankford.
Troy Moratti drew a bases-loaded walk in the fifth that scored Mitzel with the Chippewas' only other run.
Mitzel finished 2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI. Cody Allen added three singles in four at-bats to post his first career three-hit game.
Jeff Niemec worked two innings of relief to earn the win for Michigan. He improves to 1-1 on the season. Nathan Pung (0-1) took the loss for CMU.
The Chippewas continue their six-game homestand this weekend, hosting Bowling Green for a three-game Mid-American Conference series. First pitch of Friday's series opener is at 3 p.m. All three games of the weekend series will be carried live on WMMI 830 AM.
