KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Senior hurdler Tamera Thomas eclipsed her own school record in the 100m hurdles and advanced to tomorrow's event final on the first day of the NCAA Mideast Regional at the University of Tennessee. She will be the lone representative of the Central Michigan University women's track and field squad during tomorrow's second day of action at the Tom Black Track.
Sophomore Jenaie Edwards and junior Mary Raney both competed on the first day but missed out on advancing in their events. Edwards ran 53.63 in the 400m but finished ninth, one spot out of qualifying for tomorrow's final. Raney threw 48-0 in the shot put to finish 14th in the event.
"All three of them really competed well today," CMU head coach Karen Lutzke said. "Both Jenaie and Mary had their second-best marks of the season, so I'm very pleased with the way they went out and performed at this meet."
Thomas qualified sixth in the hurdles, running 13.26. The fifth through eighth-place finishers were separated by just seven hundredths of a second in today's preliminaries.
"The hurdles is going to be a very competitive race tomorrow," Lutzke said.
The top five finishers at each of the four NCAA regionals in each event automatically advance to the NCAA meet. All of the NCAA regional qualifiers who miss out on qualifying automatically are placed in an at-large pool, where the remaining eight berths to the NCAA Championships are awarded to the athletes with the top eight times/marks from the entire outdoor season. The announcement of the at-large berths will be made on Tuesday, May 30.
Thomas will be in action in the 100m hurdles final at 5:40 p.m. tomorrow afternoon.
