MOUNT PLEASANT -- Notre Dame finished with six players in double figures and used its significant height advantage to post a 94-41 victory over the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team at Rose Arena on Tuesday.
The Fighting Irish shot 55.9 percent from the floor, while holding the Chippewas to 27.0 percent. UND’s Becca Bruszewski finished with a game-high 13 points, while Shonda Long led the way for CMU with eight. Latisha Luckett finished with nine rebounds to pace CMU, while Ashley Barlow finished with a double-double, including a game-high 11 boards to go with 12 points.
“They have a lot of weapons,” head coach Sue Guevara said. “We couldn’t stop the bleeding.”
Long scored eight of CMU’s first 15 points, but the Chippewas trailed the Irish 25-15 with 6:30 remaining in the opening frame.
Back-to-back triples by freshman guard Brittany Mallory spurred a 23-4 Irish run to close out the half, as the Irish led 48-19 at the break, but the Chippewas were not without chances, getting into the bonus early in the frame.
“We missed the front end of a lot of one-and-ones, and you just can’t do that,” Guevara said. “We also had a lot of unforced errors, and against good teams you just can’t have that.”
UND’s Ashley Barlow led all scorers with 12 in the opening frame to go with seven boards, also a game-high. Long led the way for the Chippewas with her eight first-half points and three boards.
Notre Dame hit a startling 61.3 percent of its field goal attempts over the opening 20 minutes, holding CMU to 29.6 percent from the floor. The Irish muscled up for 26 points in the paint to CMU’s eight.
A 15-6 surge to start the second half spread the Irish lead to 63-25 with 12:30 left, and UND never looked back.
Candace Wilson and Britni Houghton each finished with seven points for the Chippewas, while Angel Chan and Luckett added six each.
No. 23 Notre Dame held nearly a two-inch height advantage per player over CMU, helping them to a 52-32 edge on the glass.
The Chippewas will now play nine of their next 10 away from Rose Arena. The first stop on the road swing is Oakland University, on Nov. 25.
