MOUNT PLEASANT -- Five players scored in double figures as the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team picked up an 83-71 victory over Aquinas College in exhibition action at Rose Arena on Sunday.
Sophomore Britni Houghton led the way with 17, while Angel Chan (13), Candace Wilson (11), Shonda Long (11) and Dana Westover (10) all made significant contributions offensively. CMU’s bench outscored Aquinas’ reserves, 37-5.
“I thought we were better today than we were on Thursday and I will never complain about getting a win,” CMU head coach Sue Guevara said. “But, we still have a long way to go.”
The Chippewas held a 42-39 lead at the break, as Wilson scored all of her points in the first frame and had six first-half rebounds. She used a 2-for-4 effort from beyond the arc to spark CMU after coming off the bench.
“Candace really gave us a spark when she came into the game,” Guevara said. “She hit a three right away and that boosted our offense.”
CMU shot 43.8 percent in the first half, compared to 33.3 percent for Aquinas. The Chippewas also made 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the frame.
The defense cranked up its intensity in the second half and held the Saints to just 24.2 percent from the floor and forcing 12 second-half turnovers.
A 20-4 run in the opening eight minutes of the second half ballooned CMU’s lead to 17, 62-45. Houghton scored five of her 10 second-half points during the run, and Long added five as well.
The Saints would mount a rally, getting as close as four (75-71) after a pair of free throws by Joslyn Narber, with 3:20 remaining in regulation, but the Chippewas would not allow another point and used four points from Westover, three free throws by Houghton and a layup by Chan to post the 83-71 victory.
Narber finished with a game-high 31 points and 10 rebounds for Aquinas, who also got a double-double from Alicia McCarthy (10 points, 11 rebounds). CMU had five players finish with at least five rebounds: Westover (nine), Houghton (seven), Kaihla Szunko (seven), Wilson (seven) and Long (six).
With the preseason completed, the Chippewas will open the regular season on Nov. 9, against Illinois-Chicago at Rose Arena.
“We had a good couple of practices between our two exhibition games, and I expect another week of good practices as we get ready for UIC,” Guevara said.
