DAYTON, Ohio -- Britni Houghton scored 18 points in the second half, but foul trouble hindered the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team against Dayton, as the Chippewas fell 86-71 in the championship game of the Dayton Flyer Classic.
The sophomore forward played just five minutes in the opening frame due to whistles, going 0-for-4 from the field. She would respond in the second half with all 18 of her points. Stacey Verhoff added 15 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double, and Latisha Luckett gave CMU three players scoring in double-figures with 13.
Dayton was led by freshman Kristin Daugherty, who poured in a career-best 26 points and was named the tournament’s MVP. CMU’s Stacey Verhoff and Shonda Long were named to the all-tournament team.
The Chippewas held a 23-20 lead with 8:41 remaining in the first half after a Verhoff triple, but CMU would not make another field goal until Long’s swipe and score with eight seconds left in the half. Dayton’s defense helped spark an 18-3 run to close out the half.
CMU took 13 more shots than Dayton, but because of the scoring drought hit just 24.3 percent from the field (9-for-37) while UD shot 50.0 percent (12-for-24). Dayton held a 25-16 rebounding edge at the break, and its reserves outscored CMU’s, 9-0 in the opening 20 minutes. The Flyers also converted 11-of-14 free throw attempts, compared to 5-of-6 for the Chippewas.
Six points from Houghton sparked a 10-0 CMU run to close within eight, 68-60, but the Flyers responded and stretched the lead back to 12, 75-63, thanks to Kristin Daugherty’s fifth three-point bucket of the game. Kiki Lund’s third trey of the half with 2:36 remaining would stretch the lead to 15, 80-65, and seal the victory for Dayton.
UD shot 60.0 percent (18-for-30) in the second half and 55.6 percent (30-for-54) for the contest. CMU shot 39.5 percent (15-for-38) in the final frame, 32.0 percent (24-for-75) for the contest. Dayton also held a 44-34 rebounding edge at the final horn.
The Flyers (13-2) have now won 13 straight after opening the season with back-to-back losses. CMU (4-8) will head to Oxford, Miss., to face Ole Miss on Jan. 3.
