YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -- In a game that followed the script of recent contests, the Central Michigan University women’s basketball team fell behind early and made a push in the second half. The effort fell just short, as the Chippewas dropped a 66-58 decision to Youngstown State at the Beeghly Center on Wednesday.
Candace Wilson led the way for CMU, finishing with 14 points and just missing her second career double-double with nine rebounds. Britni Houghton added 12 points, five boards and four assists.
The Chippewas spotted the Penguins a 18-1 lead with 11:33 to play in the opening frame. CMU went on a 12-4 run in part thanks to three Wilson treys to trim the lead to nine, 22-13, with eight minutes left in the first half.
CMU trailed by nine with 1:05 on the clock, 29-20, but the Chippewas were whistled for an intentional foul and a technical foul. YSU converted three of the four free throw attempts and made a bucket on the following possession to stretch its lead to 34-20.
Houghton got three the old fashioned way with eight seconds remaining in the half on an athletic play in the lane, getting fouled as she was pushed to the floor. CMU trailed 36-23 at the break.
The Penguins shot 13-for-32 (40.6 percent) from the floor while the Chippewas converted 8-of-24 attempts (33.3 percent). The Penguins also held a 23-14 rebounding edge in the opening 20 minutes.
CMU once again came out of the half and used a big run to get within two, 36-34, thanks to an 11-0 run. YSU responded by scoring the next seven points though, to stretch the lead back to nine, 43-34, at the 13:30 mark.
With just under eight minutes remaining, Houghton got a leaner to go in the lane trimming the lead to five, 49-44. With 3:51 remaining, Luckett hit a layup on a nice pass from Houghton in the lane to draw the Chippewas within three, 53-50.
After a made jumper by YSU’s Branson, Wilson hit her fourth three-point bucket of the game to get CMU within one, 55-54, with 2:29 remaining.
The Penguins lead was five with under a minute to go when Wilson scooped up an offensive rebound and scored a put-back to get the Chippewas within three.
Chan’s three came up empty with 30 seconds remaining, and the Penguins held on with good free throw shooting down the stretch for the final margin.
CMU finished 22-for-57 (38.6 percent) from the floor, while YSU ended up 21-for-58 (36.2 percent). The Penguins held a 43-38 rebounding edge at the final horn and shot nine more free throws.
