KALAMAZOO, Mich. Sharonda Hurd’s career night was not enough as Western Michigan came away with a 80-66 at home on Wednesday night.
Hurd finished with 21 points to lead CMU (10-15, 2-10 Mid-American Conference), besting her previous career high of 19 from earlier this year. She went 9-for-13 from the floor and was 2-for-2 at the line. The senior also had seven rebounds and a game-high four steals.
The Broncos (11-15, 4-8 MAC) were red hot from the field, shooting 52 percent for the game and were also hot from beyond the arc, hitting 7-of-10 (.700). In comparison, the Maroon and Gold shot just 36 percent from the floor and were 5-of-13 (.385) in three-pointers.
Angel Chan was the lone other Chippewas to reach double figures in scoring with 17 points, two off her career high. Chan was 7-for-8 at the line and 5-for-9 from the field. Ann Skufca finished with a pair of game highs, grabbing eight rebounds and tallying two blocks. She now has 51 rejections this season, which breaks CMU’s single season record. Candace Wilson had a team-high three assists.
Carrie Moore tallied a game-high 29 points to lead the Broncos. Moore, the national scoring leader, was 11-for-20 from the field and also had six rebounds. Lindsay Brown added 19 tallies and seven boards while Tiera DeLaHoussaye had a game-high 14 assists.
The Broncos held a sizable advantage in the rebounding battle, 42-32, and also finished with more assists, 21-11. CMU had a better night at the line, going 13-for-17 (.765) while WMU was 13-of-23 (.565). The Chippewas also had more steals (15-7), blocks (4-3) and fewer turnovers (10-19).
Western Michigan took control of the game early with an 8-0 run to start the game. CMU’s first points came five minutes into the game with a three-pointer by Hurd which made it 8-3. The Broncos would continue to build on their lead and held a 16-5 edge eight minutes in.
The Maroon and Gold did make a run midway through the half. With WMU up 22-10, the Chippewas scored nine unanswered points to get within three, 22-19, with six minutes to play. Unfortunately that was as close as CMU would get as Western scored the next eight to push its lead to 11, 30-19. The teams traded points the rest of the half and Western Michigan led 38-28 at the half.
A three-pointer by CMU’s Wilson brought the lead back to single digits but a 10-0 run by the Broncos put WMU up by 17 and the Broncos advantage would never slip below 12 the rest of the game. CMU did close the contest on an 8-0 run but would run out of time.
The Chippewas return to action when they host Northern Illinois on Saturday, Feb. 17. Tip off is set for 2 p.m.
