Still Alive
Four Chippewas are still alive in the championship bracket following the tournament’s first session. Only 12 schools in the 74-team field have more than four individuals remaining in the championship bracket.
Working Overtime
Wynn Michalak’s sudden victory win over Jason Trulson in the first round was Michalak’s first overtime match in 16 career NCAA Championships bouts.
Familiar Faces
Three of CMU’s four individuals in the championship bracket will face second-round opponents who they have already competed against this season. Mike Miller and Christian Sinnott both dropped decisions to their opponents from Hofstra, while Bubba Gritter was a 3-1, sudden-victory winner over Matt Koz at the Chippewa Challenge on Jan. 21.
Surprise, Surprise
The biggest upset of the first round came in the 197-pound bracket, where top-seeded Max Askren (Missouri) dropped a 5-4 decision to Bakersfield’s Brandon Halsey Thursday afternoon. Askren was 28-1 entering the national tournament.
